Being a first-time mom is a big deal. And being a human housing a first-time dog mom and her puppies is pretty intense as well.
In fact, most people who commit to housing puppies past weaning age along with their mother often give over a big part of their home (the living room, for example) to the task.
They remove furniture, set up a pen, and make sure all the provisions are there for the puppies to thrive while mom comes and goes.
Needy babies
A video shared by the owner of a beautiful Golden Retriever named Yumi was posted on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok.
Yumi and her owner live in the central Chinese city of Zhengzhou.
Now that the sweet clip has gone viral, it’s been shared far and wide, earning tens of thousands of views over various social media platforms.
Yami was saddled with her three pups who were all begging for her attention. And being a first-time mom, she wasn’t entirely sure what to do about all the crying.
We have no doubt some moms out there feel the pain. And just imagine 3 crying little ones!
She paced, and then came up with a plan.
That adorable plan happened to be captured and posted online by her owner(s) after it was captured on their security camera.
How about a toy?
While she was anxious at first she eventually came up with a plan – toys!
As the puppies lay in their pen, mama brought them toys from around the house. She came in and out with one in her mouth each time.
Yami’s owner told The Daily Mail that it took a whole 3 hours before she managed to get the pups settled down (yikes!), so this was one heck of a joint puppy protest!
But Yami’s owner had no idea just how long the tantrum lasted until she saw the security video later – and she was obviously charmed by her dog’s response to the pups. Aside from toys she also gave them some nuzzles on the face, stroking them with her nose.
Calming down the babies
“It was the first time I saw [her] doing this,” Yami’s owner told the Daily Mail. “Sometimes she would remain standing [while feeding] to avoid crushing them. I’ve also spotted her fetching warm clothes for [the puppies].”
It turns out Yami just wasn’t sure what to do to make them stop crying, so she tried a few different things.
What finally worked was simply sitting with them in the pen and pushing the toys towards them with her nose as if to say “there, there, take this and you’ll feel better.” In reality, they probably just wanted mom’s attention.
Commenters on Douyin, recalled being in the very same position as Yumi when their had their first babies.
“This made me cry. It reminded me when I first had my baby. I didn’t know what to do with my newborn child and felt so helpless,” said one mom.
It seemed everyone could acknowledge that first-time motherhood was hard for any species.
