Many of us can remember begging our parents for a puppy, a kitten, or even a pony when were were a kid. If we were lucky, we’d have our wishes granted – and our family pets would go on to make memories with us to last a lifetime.
The Dawn parents had made a promise to their two children that they would soon be adopting a puppy. The family had visited a shelter, where they found the perfect puppy… but mom Julie Dawn decided that the pup wasn’t just for them. Little did the girls know that mom was actually telling a white lie.
Julie turned her camera on her kids to film their devastated reactions as they sat in their car on their way back from the shelter. Julie’s youngest daughter, bless, is sobbing her heart out. Her older sister seems angrier with mom than upset at this point.
Mom points out that “there will be other puppies”, to which the eldest daughter retorts,
“So? They won’t be as cute as him.”
Ans that’s told mom. The older girl stares resolutely out of the window, while her little sister continues to sob. It’s a sad scene all round, and both girls have no idea that mom is actually testing them to see just how serious they are about adoption.
She tentatively asks the girls what they thought was so special about the puppy, who, after all, they had only met for a minute or two.
The younger daughter replies:
“When we see things that are cute, we love them and we want to get them.”
Mom tries to convince them that tomorrow, they won’t even remember the dog, but the girls are insistent that they will. The older daughter stubbornly says that she will “remember that day until I die”.
Uh-oh. The situation seems to be worsening for mom, especially when her littlest daughter demands,
“How can you not get a puppy that’s adorable?”
Mom obviously realizes that it’s time to take action. Next minute, dad drives back to the shelter and gets out of the car – and when he comes back, he has the little puppy in his hands.
The two girls are so stunned for a moment that they’re lost for words. Mom asks them what they think, and her littlest daughter insists that she knew it all along.
Dad hands over the puppy to the girls in the back, and they each take it in turns to snuggle up to their new best friend. The pup, who they named Buddy, already looks right at home, kissing their faces and cuddling into their chests.
When mom asks whether the girls will take good care of him, the “yes!” couldn’t come quicker. It’s clear that both girls are devoted to their new pet already, and they’ll love him with all of their hearts from this moment onward.
It might have been a slightly mean trick mom had played on her two kids, but the tears of sadness soon switch to tears of happiness. We’re sure the little girls would have been able to forgive mom in the end – it’d be hard not to when she’d brought a little bundle of happiness into their lives.
