You may not be able to teach an old dog new tricks, but you can certainly teach it new games. Dogs are renowned for loving many things; bones, belly rubs, but probably the thing they love the most has more to do with their personality. They simply just love fun. See the way a dog’s eyes light up when you mention going to the park, or when you hold a ball. Cyndi Lauper may have said that girls just want to have fun, but I’d argue that so do man’s best friend.
Sebastien the massive fur ball Newfoundland, is one such dog!
And who better to be a game partner than adorable toddler Sierra?
It seems that the favorite game for this pair of pals is a good old game of hide and seek!
While Sierra takes a treat for Sebastien in her hand and waddles off to find her hiding spot, Sebastien obediently sits and waits for his cue to go find her. He certainly is well behaved and seems to be attempting to fein like he’s not paying attention to where Sierra is headed. Well played Seb.
Eventually he is told by Sierra’s mom to go find her.
Sebastien heads off dutifully down the hallway to find his treat (and Sierra holding it). For a great big dog, he doesn’t seem to be following his nose very much. Perhaps it’s not Seb’s destiny to become a successful police dog or an airport sniffer dog? He trots through the hallway and through the living room, not really doing a deep search.
He disappears around the corner, but re-appears a moment later.
He really seems like he’s the lost one and not Sierra! Don’t forget to look behind the Christmas tree Sebastien! Maybe he was thinking that since it’s a treat for him, it would be around the tree in the true spirit of Christmas. Sorry old pal, you’re going to have to keep looking! Why not try use the high-powered olfactory processing system at the end of your snout?
Finally he gives up on the living room, and heads back out into the hallway.
He check everywhere EXCEPT where Sierra is. Not to spoil it for those watching the video (anyone who likes their daily dose of cuteness) but moving away from the living room is a big mistake. I was under the impression that dogs had an incredibly powerful sense of smell, but this big fella doesn’t even seem to be able to smell the right room!
No Sebastien, she’s not in that random closet…
After Sebastien gives up on the hall, goes back through the living room and returns to the kitchen. Even Mom starts getting weary of his nose-blindness.
“Come on Sebastien use your nose”
-She finally says. Some kind of dog who needs to be reminded to use his sniffer! He does seem to heed this advice and starts moving along the right track…
Finally, he seems to catch on to where Sierra and his reward are stowed.
Maybe he just needs to be within smelling range? He catches a whiff of the treat, and eventually finds (and startles) Sierra who hands over the treat in defeat. Well done Sebastien, I knew you’d get it right eventually.
