When Kristin, a deeply traumatized mastiff, was brought home by her foster mom Jodi, she was overwhelmed with fear.
Despite Jodi and her family’s decade-long experience in fostering, they had never encountered a dog as scared as Kristin.
On her first day, Kristin chose to stand alone in a corner, avoiding any interaction.
Concerned but understanding, Jodi ensured that Kristin had access to food and water.
The family made concerted efforts to reassure the frightened dog.
Jodi shared, “My husband and I would take turns. Anywhere from 10 to 12 hours a day, and just let her know we aren’t going to do these sudden movements.”
Instead of forcing interactions, they patiently stood or sat near Kristin outdoors, ensuring she felt their friendly presence.
This gentle approach continued for weeks, with the family waiting for Kristin to show signs of trust.
The breakthrough moment arrived when Kristin, on her own accord, decided to step inside the house.
Jodi, moved to tears, said, “I felt at that moment she trusted that this house is a safe house.”
However, Kristin’s journey wasn’t over. She would often retreat to the bathroom corner, indicating there was still work to be done.
Over the next couple of months, Kristin began to truly feel at home.
The family rejoiced when she voluntarily approached Jodi’s husband, seeking affection. “That was huge for us,” Jodi exclaimed.
Alongside her human caregivers, Kristin also found companionship with other dogs in the house, some of whom were fellow fosters.
These interactions played a significant role in her healing process.
Delving into Kristin’s past, it was revealed on Jodi’s foster page that she had been rescued from an abusive environment along with three of her mastiff siblings.
This traumatic past explained her initial distrust towards her foster family.
Jodi elaborated on the dire circumstances of Kristin’s rescue:
“Charges were filed for severe cruelty and neglect as these mastiffs were found in horrendous conditions. Rescue stepped in and BDHP was able to save four of them (another rescue took the fifth). They are all currently in foster homes and will be available to adopt soon.”
While Kristin’s siblings also grappled with emotional challenges, Jodi’s love and care showcased the transformative power of compassion.
With time and unwavering support, Kristin blossomed into a joyful and loving dog. Originally, the plan was for her to be adopted once she was fully healed.
However, in a heartwarming twist, Jodi and her family realized that Kristin had already found her forever home with them.
They joyfully declared her an “official foster fail,” signifying that she would remain a cherished member of their family.
It’s been over a year since Kristin found her forever home, and she’s doing so well.
She loves her parents and has become the sweetest, happiest girl. She has also helped the other foster dogs her parents have taken in to open up. What a wonderful happy ending all around.
