Some rescue situations are a bit more… interesting than others! For most animal rescues, sending a person with a rope and some food is usually enough. When the animals in question are sneaky, it makes things a bit harder.
CBS Sacramento recently covered one of the wildest dog rescues you have ever seen!
After getting multiple calls of two dogs wandering by themselves, the El Dorado County Animal Services Office finally had enough information to understand what had happened. Two dogs had been abandoned on the side of the road.
This situation was a bit different, however.
Both dogs were reported to be German Shepherds and had seemingly been abandoned on the side of the road. The story complicated, however, when animal services realized that they weren’t just sitting around. The two dogs had wandered off and were completely lost on the mountainside of Highway 50!
Without a clear idea of where the dogs were, the rescue was made a bit more tricky.
The mountains made everything quite a bit more difficult. Getting together a special team, the El Dorado team first tried a simple rescue. Every time they approached the dogs, however, they would run off into the wilderness!
Since the dogs weren’t cooperating all that well, they had to develop a new plan.
With their initial attempts exhausted, they move on to something a bit more… custom. Knowing they would never catch them on foot, the team, led by Ashley Bragg, devised a trap.
The giant metal cage had a few special features to help them trap the dogs!
The cage was designed with a night-vision camera and a remote-controlled door! Since they wanted to make sure they caught BOTH the dogs, they had to station someone to watch the camera at all hours of the night.
Over the days, the dogs became less wary of the big cage but still weren’t brave enough to go in!
Every night someone would sit and watch the dogs get closer and closer to the cage. The trick to find the perfect combination of food took time, but then they finally found out what they were craving, it worked!
The team tried hanging t-bone steaks!
To no avail, the team even tried hanging steaks from the top of the cage to tempt the dogs in! That might have even worked for a human! The sneaky dogs finally came in the cage with a mixture of cat food, liver pate, and dried dog food mixed in. Talk about picky eaters!
Now, the dogs are back at the shelter and have captured the hearts of the workers.
These two sweet dogs are finally safe, and they have the BEST personality! From what the reports say, they have the entire place wrapped around their little paw! The next step is to find these two pups a home.
After the shelter gets the two dogs back up to weight, they plan to put them up for adoption!
After their time spent in the woods, Ashe and Toby (their new names) were quite emaciated. They each need to gain about 20 more pounds, and then they will be well on their way to finding a forever home!
