There are some routines that are near and dear to our hearts.
Every Friday for the past two years, Lily the Labrador has been waiting patiently in the front yard for her best friend to show up.
He’s loyal, treats her well, and his timing for their weekly playdate is absolutely impeccable.
His name is David, and he’s the neighborhood garbage man!
Lily has always loved spending time “people watching” in the front yard of her home in Bedford, New Hampshire. She likes to lay in the grass, soak up the sun, and watch people pass on by.
When she isn’t chasing squirrels up the tree, she secretly hopes someone will stop by and say “hi,” and maybe even give her a treat.
But nope – no such luck!
No one, not even the mailman, would give her a friendly pat on the head.
Even the attention of an unwelcome solicitor would have been welcome at that point.
Instead of waiting around for someone to finally notice her, Lily figured out how to wrangle a BFF into her life all by herself!
The smart pup began to notice that every Thursday night her family would bring the trash bins out to the curb.
And the next day on Friday, a man in a truck would swing by and haul them away.
So, Lily got into the habit of waiting in the yard before the garbage man showed up.
Naturally, David couldn’t resist Lily’s gorgeous looks and friendly smile!
She bounced up and down with excitement at the sight of him and he was happy to reciprocate.
The clever lass even taught him how to sit, and give her treats on command.
What more could a dog want in a best friend?
David may have thought he was just doing his job and picking up the garbage, but somehow a floofy treasure inserted herself into his life instead.
Ishaan Chatterjee, Lily’s owner, told The Dodo that “Their relationship has blossomed into the sweetest thing. We actually give [our garbage man] holiday gifts every year to show our appreciation for how he treats Lily.”
Ishaan has been posting videos of Lily and David’s amazing friendship on TikTok, and people can’t get enough of their special connection.
According to Ishaan, Lily’s relationship with David is very special.
Although Lily is a love bug with pretty much anyone she meets, he knows that her friendship with David is just different.
Of course, that might have something to do with the treats that David always carries in his pockets!
But, Ishaan also thinks it has something to do with Lily’s ability to see the good in people. As long as you’re good people, Lily will reflect that goodness back to you.
“She shows us how to be more kind to others! It’s amazing what we can learn from animals.”
It’s not every day you get to play and goof around on the job. David is one lucky guy!
