Here’s something special you don’t see everyday. A man and his horse doing a comedy act. It is an entertaining act of jaw dropping moments and laughter. Tommie Turvey and his team from Equine Extremist were at the 70th Annual Del Mar National Horse Show in Del Mar, California. For this act, it’s Tommie and his horse, Pokerjoe.
Now horses are known for being strong, confident looking animals.
Many have been featured in television shows and films as well, always majestic, always galloping with a hero or villain. And yes, they are beautiful as well as highly intelligent.
Pokerjoe takes a different approach. Choosing acting and comedy over the usual macho role, he has become well known and beloved by many for his amusing antics not normally seen in a horse.
Tommie arrives astride Pokerjoe, both looking dapper for their audience.
They ride in with so much poise!
Naturally, they start off with a salute. And when you look as handsome as these two are, you would give that salute with pride. After all, it’s a salute, what could go wrong?
Well… Tommie falls off, right under Pokerjoe who proceeds to give Tommie a kiss.
Hoping this horse brushed his teeth…
Tommie manages to get out between his horse’s hind legs but not without some difficulty. He even loses his hat in the process. Well he finds it under Pokerjoe, and he might as well fix the saddle and put it back on the horse, right?
Wrong. Tommie turns his back on Pokerjoe to dust off the horse saddle and as he is getting ready, his handsome horse decides to take time out. Pokerjoe slowly drops to the ground, stretching out as if to have a nap. Wow.
Tommie seems to get frustrated for a bit until he realizes he has an audience to please. Smile!
He does everything he can to try and get the horse to its feet but ends up getting another minty kiss from his steed.
Pokerjoe, ever the entertainer, goes flat on his back and raises all four of his hooves in the air. Well, Tommie may as well have fun and roll with it. He straddles the big horse’s chest, holds on to Pokerjoe’s front hooves.
They do a little dance to the song “Cuban Pete”, sang and performed by the wonderful Jim Carrey from his 1994 film, The Mask.
Well after Pokerjoe had had his fun, he sits up, still trying to process what happened, deep in thought. Tommie goes behind his horse, sits as well, and has a little meditation session of his own to the Jeopardy theme.
Finally, a little riding! At this point, the audience has done nothing but laugh and applaud what they were seeing.
But the horse had other ideas. Tommie bounces off and what follows is a cat and mouse chase between a huge horse and a man in black. Tommie goes up and over to the audience’s side trying to get away from Pokerjoe.
He manages to climb back down in a mad dash only to see the Breyer hot on his heels. Tommie gets another kiss before managing to hide under the box. Pokerjoe gracefully climbs on as Tommie takes a peek around.
Cue the Pink Panther!
Tell me this is not one of the most hilarious animal acts ever! Tommie gets Pokerjoe off to the cheering and applause of their fans. How do they exit? By riding of course. But for some reason, Tommie gets on facing Pokerjoe’s bum side. Oh well. He drops on his elbows waving a white flag just glad his ordeal is over.
