Capybaras are the largest rodents in the world and are found throughout northern and central South America. They’re related to guinea pigs, and the resemblance is clear! Capybaras are often described as giant guinea pigs.
These gentle animals live near water because they need to spend about 50% of their time in the water. While they can become pets, most live in the wild with other capybaras.
In this video, we’ll see how a man became friends with a wild capybara.
Luciano Mochinski often passed a group of capybaras during his daily run through Parque Náutico in Brazil. He never interacted with them, but he would take photos and videos of them lying and lounging around the grass.
However, a surprising thing happened one rainy day.
A capybara took shelter under Luciano’s umbrella. He nicknamed her Capi.
Luciano thought the interaction with Capi would be a one-time event because she was a wild animal not used to human contact.
The next day, Luciano passed the capybaras again, and to his surprise, Capi approached him and wanted to say hello.
Luciano and Capi quickly became friends. Since then, they would hang out every day when he visited the park.
Luciano would stop mid-run to pet and scratch Capi.
Capi clearly enjoyed Luciano’s visits because they meant she would get love and cuddles from her new friend.
One day, Luciano was walking through the park as usual when he noticed two new members of the group. He realized they were babies.
They weren’t any ordinary baby capybaras. These little ones were his friend Capi’s new babies.
Like any new mom, Capi kept a close eye on her babies. She nursed them and stayed close to them when they were walking around.
Even if she was protective, she allowed Luciano to go near her and her babies. She was comfortable letting him go near when she was nursing them.
Capi also allowed Luciano to pet and play with her babies.
Eventually, all the capybaras in the group allowed Luciano to go hear them and hang out with them during his daily walks. He would watch them graze by the river and simply stay near them.
It’s no surprise that this video has over one million views. Luciano and Capi have won the hearts of netizens.
One commenter said, “This is just so sweet. Really nice to see that he earned her trust and didn’t just try forcing his affection onto her. He showed her the respect that she deserves.”
Another said, “Wild animals submitting for scratches and belly rubs never fail to amaze me.”
We’re also amazed at the relationship that blossomed between Luciano and Capi.
Seeing a human and a wild animal learn to trust each other is beautiful.
Capybaras are known to be gentle and sweet animals, and Capi and her friends prove this again.
Capi understood that Luciano had good intentions toward them. Because of this, she trusted him and considered him a friend.
