One freezing cold day, Officer Jeff Gonzalez was patrolling the streets of Autumn Ridge, Wisconsin when he saw a strange sight. A large black lab was pacing back and forth on the snow-covered sidewalk, looking anxious and scared. Gonzalez decided to help the dog, who he thought was lost.

Gonzalez stopped his car next to the dog. When the dog, John Boy, noticed the car, he started barking loudly, still looking frantic. Gonzalez rolled down his window and called out to the dog. When John Boy realized that the officer wanted to help him, he began wagging his tail.

Once Gonzalez saw that John Boy was friendly, he got out of his car and approached him. As soon as Gonzalez was on the sidewalk, John Boy started running. Gonzalez frowned, thinking he had scared the dog. But then, the dog stopped moving and looked back at Gonzalez, making it clear that he wanted the officer to follow him.

John Boy led Gonzalez to a nearby house. When Gonzalez got there, he saw an unconscious woman sitting slumped over in a chair on her front porch.

Gonzalez was shocked and worried. He told Fox 6 News:

“I thought she was dead. And when I went up, she was very cold to the touch. Her lips were blue. But I was able to determine she was breathing and had a pulse. I called for assistance and my partner was close. So together we got her in the house.”

Gonzalez identified the woman as Krystal Wendt. While they waited for an ambulance, Gonzalez reached out to her next of kin: her daughter Tianne and her sister. Tianne told the officers that her mom had a heart condition, which was had caused her to collapse.

Tianne and her aunt rushed over to the hospital to see Krystal. When they got there, Tianne gave Officer Gonzalez a big hug to say thank you.

Tianne wasn’t surprised to hear about the part John Boy played in her mom’s rescue.

Tianne told reporters that John Boy is very protective of her mom. Even though John Boy is only three years old, he had been adopted and returned to the shelter three times before ending up with Krystal. John Boy was grateful and devoted to Krystal, and Krystal also loved him with all her heart.

Tianne thanked John Boy for saving her mom by giving him lots of scratches behind his ears!

Officer Gonzalez is also grateful to John Boy for his help. He believes that John Boy is the true hero in this story:

“I gotta believe that at this point, he pointed me in the right direction,” he said.
