Jesse and Tara never imagined that their act of kindness would turn into a life-changing event.
They had decided to foster a pit bull named Kaya, who was on the brink of being euthanized.
The unfortunate reality of shelters is that some dogs are put down, despite the increasing efforts to promote adoption over shopping.
Kaya was one such dog, found on a farm with no known history or previous owner, and was taken to a shelter where she was unwanted and overlooked.
When Jesse and Tara took Kaya in, she was in a pitiful state.
Her ribs were visible against her skin, and she was severely underweight.
Despite her physical condition, Kaya’s spirit remained unbroken.
The couple provided Kaya with a loving home and nourishing food, aiming to restore her to a healthy weight.
However, they soon noticed an unusual swelling in her belly area, which they initially attributed to overfeeding.
Concerned about Kaya’s sudden weight gain, they decided to consult a veterinarian.
The news they received was unexpected and overwhelming – Kaya was pregnant.
The couple was taken aback, having had no inkling of Kaya’s condition.
The revelation that Kaya was carrying new life within her, just as she was on the verge of losing her own, was a profound one.
And it wasn’t just a small litter of six puppies.
As Kaya’s pregnancy progressed, she became noticeably heavier, spending most of her time lying down or rolling on her back in the grass.
As her due date approached, she began showing signs of nesting.
Jesse and Tara prepared themselves for Kaya’s labor, unaware of the surprises that lay ahead.
They anticipated a long day with seven or eight puppies, assuming that it would be a “day thing” and they would be done by dinner time.
However, the puppies kept coming.
After the ninth, then the tenth, Kaya continued to give birth.
Two and a half days later, the puppies were climbing over each other to nurse.
Just when they thought the fifteenth puppy would be the last, Kaya started panting heavily, and the sixteenth puppy emerged.
In their endeavor to save one life, Jesse and Tara had ended up saving so many more.
Sadly, two of the pups were stillborn, but the others were perfectly healthy.
Despite the exhaustion from giving birth, Kaya was a hands-on mother, lovingly running around and playing with her litter.
For a week, Jesse and Tara took turns watching over the puppies, who would spill out from their beds, filling their home with joy and laughter.
However, the time came when the puppies had to be given away.
Jesse and Tara decided to adopt Kaya and one of her puppies, Sefina.
The remaining puppies found their forever homes, a chance they got only because a couple decided to save one foster dog.
It’s a good reminder that sometimes, when we set out to save a life, we end up saving many more.
