We all know that certain foods just don’t belong in your dog’s diet! As tempting as it might be to feed them table food, there are usually reasons that kibble isn’t just a cheaper option, it’s safer, too! We often know the “famous foods” dogs can’t have, but what about these other ones? Check them out below!

1. Alcohol

While a little booze might be relaxing for you and your friends, it can be incredibly dangerous for your dog. Alcohol can cause disorientation, weak breathing, and can even induce a coma if given too much. Although it might sound funny, it’s not for your dog.

2. Avocado

Avocado is super healthy for humans and contains so many important vitamins, minerals, and fats. Something else that it has, however, is persin. Persin is a toxin that can affect humans, but not in the quantities present in avocado. For dogs, however, it’s much more potent and can cause heart problems and death.

3. Xylitol

While this may not sound very familiar, this artificial sweetener is present in a lot of different foods, namely sugar-free gum, toothpaste, mouthwash, and candy. It can cause liver failure and seizures in our furry friends.

4. Cooked bones

Dogs LOVE bones and they can be a great source of nutrients and tooth health for your dog. The big factor here is if they’re raw or cooked. Cooked bones are prone to splintering, creating a potential for puncturing the stomach lining and intestines. If you want to start giving your dog raw bones, do some research beforehand!

5. Garlic and onions

These two foods are especially tasty for humans but have a chemical called allicin in them. Allicin has the adverse reaction of reducing your dog’s red blood cell count and causing anemia. If your dog eats a stray onion piece off the floor while you are chopping, expect some vomiting soon after.

6. Grapes and raisins

We have probably heard of grapes, but don’t forget to include raisins on the list! They are extremely dangerous to dogs and a small handful is enough to kill. Your dog will become weak and have trouble breathing, followed by depression and low energy.

7. Tobacco

While the image of a dog with a cigar in its mouth seems to be synonymous with bulldogs, don’t try it with yours! Tobacco is basically a poison for dogs and it can cause weakness, tremors, and abnormal heart rates. You can see the symptoms within an hour of them getting a hold of the tobacco.

8. Macadamia nuts

Macadamia nuts are among the most dangerous foods that a dog can ingest. They are part of the Proteaceae family and can cause vomiting, lethargy, and can damage the nervous system. They can lose control over their legs and could also have increased body temps.

9. Cinnamon

While cinnamon isn’t necessarily toxic to dogs, it can cause irritation in their mouths and inside their stomachs. It can also lower their blood sugar and cause stomach aches and diarrhea. It can also be inhaled accidentally and cause coughing and choking.

10. Caffeine

Small amounts of caffeine can cause death in dogs and cats alike. Some of the symptoms include elevated heart rate, blood pressure increases, tremors, seizures, and eventually death. While you may enjoy a cuppa joe in the morning, your pup won’t!
