Many humans would risk life and limb for their pets. There is a bond of connection that extends in both directions when it comes to our furry friends. As owners, it is often our responsibility to look after the creatures we have been entrusted with and to protect them when necessary.

Trent Tweddale and his dog, Loki, were out for a walk, just like any typical day. In Wesley Chapel, Florida, where they lived, there had been a surplus of rain recently, causing some areas to overflow their banks and flood.

While walking his dog, they neared one of these flooded areas.

Things were normal as Trent and Loki walked like any other day. Loki walked up and put his front two paws in the water… and was immediately attacked by a 13-foot alligator!

When the 13-foot alligator jumped out of the water and grabbed Loki by the leg, Trent snapped into action.

Trent was a former army staff sergeant and jumped to action. When an alligator of this size attacks, seconds are the difference between life and death. When Trent did next is astonishing.

Trent had a straight-up fistfight with a massive alligator.

When the gator grabbed the dog’s leg, Trent tried to pull on his collar. When he realized the gator was stronger than him, he switched tactics. Dropping into the water, he started punching as hard as he could on the alligators head.

“I grabbed the dog’s collar to try to pull him back, and I ended up in a tug-of-war match with this gator, and the gator was not letting go. So I let go of the collar, and I got about knee-deep into the water and started pounding on the gator’s head until he eventually let go.”

When the gator finally let go, the battle still wasn’t over.

Trent had only suffered minor scratches but Loki was in critical condition. With his front leg nearly severed completely, the next battle had already started. Trent rushed Loki to the vet hospital to save his life.

Getting him into emergency surgery, Loki was able to keep his leg.

If the struggle had gone on any longer, Loki may have lost his leg, and potentially, his life. Thankfully, he had an owner and friend who cared for him enough to risk his own life to save him.

The journey isn’t over, but it’s looking good.

Loki now has some metal plates and screws to make sure his leg grows properly. With some time and some love, Loki is sure to make a recovery. All because Trent went to save him, Loki has his life AND his leg.

Trent is still looking for revenge.

Trent was angry (understandably) after the gator attack on his dog. More than just rescuing his dog, he wanted revenge on the creature that almost took his friend from him. Using a dead rooster, Trent has been searching for the gator that hurt his friend both for revenge and to save others who walk in the area.

He hasn’t had any luck yet, but the most important piece of the story is over.
