In 2016, an apartment building in Rotterdam, Netherlands caught on fire, and the blaze quickly moved through the building. Fifteen apartments had to be evacuated, but thankfully nobody was hurt. Sadly, though, a ginger cat named Sammy got left behind, and he very nearly lost his life to the fire.

Thankfully, before this tragedy could happen, a brave team of firefighters rescued Sammy.

The firefighters ran through the building, searching for anyone who had been left behind. Then, they saw an orange cat lying behind a wall of fire. The cat laid completely still, and the firefighters weren’t sure if he was still alive. But they knew they had to try and save him, so they carefully lifted the cat up.

The firefighters carried the unconscious cat outside the building and into the fresh air. One of the firefighter’s body-cams captured the team’s heroic actions as they worked to save the cat’s life.

One of the firefighters put an oxygen mask over Sammy’s face, trying to revive him. One of the firefighters also performed CPR on the cat.

Finally, Sammy regained consciousness, and the firefighters gave him water to clear out his airways. Once Sammy could breathe, he let out a tiny “meow.”

“Yes, that’s good, talk nicely. Here you are, a little water,” one of the firefighters told the brave cat as they pet his chest.

They gave Sammy a little more water, and he started moving more, slowly coming back to life.

Once he was ready, he reunited with his owner, Stan Loemers. Loemers was so happy to see his cat. He had lost most of his possessions in the fire, but he said that Sammy was all that truly mattered to him.

“Even if my house may have burned down three times, this animal means the world to me,” Loemers told Daily Mail.

Loemers also explained why he thinks Sammy didn’t run out of the building when the fire started:

“Sammy is a bit old and a little chubby which is the likely reason as to why he did not dare to escape on his own.”

Loemers took Sammy over to a local animal hospital for further treatment, but he was able to leave after just a few days. Now, Sammy is happy and healthy, and it’s all thanks to the firefighters who did everything they could to save his life! If you’d like to see the amazing rescue, check out the video below.
