Music is something that is cross-cultural and brings us all together. No matter who you are or where you are from, music plays a central role in culture. We all know what your next question is, however, “What about cows?”

Animals can enjoy music as well.

Thankfully, there has been some research on the topic of animals and music. For a long time, it was believed that music was purely a human construct, and therefore, enjoyment. Newer research seems to be changing that consensus. Live Science says:

“Rather than liking classical or rock, Snowdon, an animal psychologist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has discovered that animals march to the beat of a different drum altogether. They enjoy what he calls “species-specific music”: tunes specially designed using the pitches, tones and tempos that are familiar to their particular species.”

To sum all that up, animals enjoy music that is familiar.

Since music is species-specific, sounds and noises that mimic that of the species are likely to get a response! You can see this a bit when a dog howls as a firetruck or ambulance drives by. They respond because they can hear the frequencies in a familiar way!

What kind of music would a cow listen to?

In all the world’s great questions (purpose, God, meaning), one of the best questions to ask is what kind of music do cows listen to. Thankfully, we have some answers for you.

If animals like to hear sounds and frequencies mimicked from their own species… a cow would like…

A trombone! If there is an instrument that hits the cows just right, it must be a trombone! The bass and reverberation are pretty similar to how cattle lowes.

This man decided to give it a try!

Farmer Derek is known on YouTube for his funny videos involving his farm. More than just a farmer, Derek loves to find new and funny ways to do things around his farm.

Sitting down with a trombone, Derek began to play a pop hit.

Sitting in a plastic wicker chair with cowboy hat donned, the scene couldn’t be funnier. As Farmer Derek sits down, he pulls up his trombone and begins to rip some bassy notes out onto an empty field.

If the song sounds familiar, you probably know it!

“Royals” by Lorde was a massive hit when it was released in 2014. Who knew that cows would love it so much, too? As Derek sits down and starts to play, nothing really seems to happen.

As Farmer Derek continues to play the riffs of the song, you really can’t see much going on.

With a large hill in front of the camera, it is pretty empty. Everything is quiet (save the trombone) until forty or so seconds later. We slowly start to see some strange movement on the crest of the hill.

Within moments of the movement, the entire hillside is alive with the farmer’s beefy friends.

As the song continues to play, a stampede of cattle runs down the hill and towards the nonchalant trombonist. Nodding their heads, they seem to be loving the serenade!

Inching closer, the cows start lowing and wagging their tails, very pleased with Derek’s performance.

Who knew that fifty cows could be cute? The whole situation is rather hilarious and easily merits the viewing of the four-minute video.
