In early 2019, Laci Reamer and her family adopted an adorable eight-year-old cat named Hubert from their local shelter.

Hubert quickly settled into Reamer’s home—he loved his new family! There was just one problem: Hubert had a fascination with the outdoors.

The shelter told Reamer that Hubert had always been an indoor cat. Reamer decided it would be best if he stayed an indoor cat. But despite that, Hubert seemed determined to explore this mythical outside world. During his first few months with Reamer, he tried to escape multiple times.

“He tries to escape on the daily,” Reamer told The Dodo. “He succeeded one time in his escape. We didn’t know until he started walking up the sidewalk! How can you miss a 31-pound cat escaping through your legs at the door? Yes, you read that right! He’s 31 pounds. He’s chunky, but spunky (he is on a diet).”

At first, Reamer couldn’t figure out how Hubert was getting outside. Nobody in her house was letting him out.

Reamer watched Hubert one day, and she figured out was what happening. Whenever someone came to the door, Hubert looked at them with big, watery eyes. He would also meow at them until they let him outside.

Once Reamer realized what was happening, she put a hilarious sign on her window.

“Please don’t let the cat out,” the sign said. “No matter what he tells you. (The cat is a liar. He is not an outdoorsman.)”

Reamer explained that she lived on a busy street, and she didn’t want poor Hubert accidentally getting hurt.

“We made the sign because he will truly give anyone that look with those big eyes like, ‘Please help me. I have things to see and do out there. If you just open that door, I’ll slide right by you,’” Reamer said. “He’s very good at begging, so we wanted to make people aware. We live on a busy street and don’t want him to get hurt!”

Everybody who came to Reamer’s door loved the sign. Reamer’s UPS driver told her that the sign made him crack up. The sign also worked well—people stopped falling for Hubert’s adorable tricks.

Reamer is glad that Hubert is safe, but she also wants him to be able to explore his beloved outdoors. And so, she ordered a harness and leash for him. Now, she’ll be able to safely take him on fun adventures.

“We just ordered him a harness and leash to start his grand outdoor adventures,” Reamer said. “Fingers crossed that will go well!”

Hubert is a cute cat who knows what he wants. We hope he and his mom have a great time exploring the outdoors together!
