Dog starts barking late in night. Owner flips on light to find intruder with knife inside home
The family’s story would have played out very differently if their 8-year-old dog Marley wouldn’t have been there.

Although Labradors don’t look intimidating- they’re rather cute and easy-going dogs-, they actually make ideal guard dogs.

Labradors have the innate tendency to protect their pack and its leader, ie. you.

As puppies, labradors have been known to bark quite a lot, especially in social situations when they bark even though you can’t see any immediate danger around. Your dog, though, may think you’re in danger and it wants to make sure you’re kept safe.

This breed makes adorable, obedient, clever dogs that are super loyal to the family they are raised by.

Just like Marley, the 8-year-old labrador that saved the Newsom family a few weeks ago, when a knife-wielding intruder showed up at their home.

Marley is not just a pet, she’s a family member for the Newsoms. Mom and dad love and take care of her, while the kids enjoy playing with her any time of the day.

A few weeks ago, it was Marley’s time to shine and to prove that she would go above and beyond for the family that has treated her as a real, precious friend.

It was late in the evening, and it was dark outside, the Newsom family was going to bed, when they heard Marley bark.

“It was pitch black,” says mom Amber, “so we couldn’t see anything, only could hear Marley. And once [Taylor] flipped the hall light on, we realized that the guy was hold up in the corner trying to hide.”

This was certainly a moment Amber and her husband, Taylor, will never forget. The 53-year old intruder, Thong Pham, had probably used the back door which the family had forgotten to lock before going to bed.

The man was holding a knife, which he used to attack the family dog.

“So, I think he got to the front door and realized ‘I can’t get out’, and by that point, Marley has got him cornered […] and as I pull back, blood shot out of my arm.”

Taylor and the labrador tried to immobilize the man, but he attacked them, leaving Marley slashed, and Taylor’s arm bleeding.

In the meantime, Amber tried to protect the kids, 6-year-old Finley and 4-year-old Sadie.

“But it was really hard because I was trying to make sure that my husband wasn’t going to die,” she said.

Thankfully, Pham panicked when he realized that the two girls were at home, and he didn’t try to hurt Taylor or the dog any more. Instead, he tried to escape.

Later on, the police managed to arrest the man, who was hiding alongside a creek.

All’s well that ends well one might say, but the Newsom family were traumatized by the incident. Both emotionally and physically, since Taylor’s blood literally stained the furniture and walls, which they had to change and paint respectively.

“So we’ve got a lot to think about and a lot to do before we’re comfortable going back to our own home,” Amber and Taylor explained.

Pham is being charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and cruelty to an animal. It is a relief for the family to know that the guy who tried to harm them is going to pay for his deed.
