Humans don’t have a corner on the market when it comes to aging and the problems that comes with it.
Unfortunately, we watch our pets age right along beside us. Some of us feel helpless about it, and others are able to come up with ways to ease their pain to the best they can.
That is the case of Pia Hjelmsø of Denmark. She is the owner of an aging English bulldog and like many large dogs, Aase has arthritis. The sad thing is that while many dogs—and humans—don’t end up with the problem until they are older, Aase has suffered with this depilating disease since puppyhood.
Young or old it’s horrible, but this poor dog never had all that pain free bouncing and fun that other dogs had. No tearing around the house and up and down the stairs just for the sheer joy of it.
Mom to the Rescue
Fortunately, Hjelmsø is a great dog mom, and RepublicWorld reports that with the help of a friend she devised a way for Aase to not only get up and down stairs without any associated pain, but to do so in style.
The friend, Lars Trillingsgaard, built the cutest little red model of a London double-decker bus. The bus runs on a track and is open on top for Aase to sit inside. She posted it to her Facebook when the project was complete.
Trillingsgaard got the idea from another loving pet owner, Jean-Marc, who together with a friend Renée Santiago, posted a video to YouTube about their experiences.
The Inspiration
Jean-Marc, the owner of Bubba had looked all over for a way to get his dog up and down the stairs but was unable to find anything helpful.
As he says in his informational video,
“Renée and I wanted this to be out there so other pet families can have something to look at. I didn’t have much luck on the internet finding anything. So I had to come up with this all on my own, and go from there. A lot of trial and error, and I’m going to show you a few things.”
Before long, his pet stair lift, which he named Bubba’s Boom Boom Bus was a hit.
Those who watched the YouTube video were not only blown away that Jean-Mark was willing to do this for his dog, they were touched by his devotion.
And ready to take on the same project themselves, for their own aging or ill pets.
Juliana Garibaldi commented,
“Thanks a lot! My parents have 2 old heavy dogs with problems. And this is the best solution for them. My husband and I will try at Christmas time help my father to build it in their home (in Brazil). Thanks a lottt! You don’t have idea how you help other people sharing this video!”
Trillingsgaard gets Creative
Trillingsgaard, clearly a craftsman, had seen the video and like any good friend, offered to help Hjelmsø and Aase.
Based on the instructions left by Jean-Marc he was able to modify and customize the design, creating a unique stairlift for the dog. According to InspireMore, it’s built so the motor sits underneath, leaving space for Aase to sit in comfort up top. The motor pulls the stairlift up and down by a wire.
So for anyone who has an aging pet that has problems with stairs, you now have a creative way to deal with it!
