When you take a look at what Bowie looks like now compared to what he looked like when he was first found in a dumpster behind the Wichita Animal Action League, you’d think you were looking at two different dogs.

The pit bull was found by a doctor who was throwing out the trash. Bowie was completely emaciated, nothing but skin and bones, inside of a wire kennel that was tossed in the dumpster.

Despite being abused and neglected, Bowie still had an extremely sweet demeanor.

“He instantly dropped his head and came and climbed into my lap. I was like, ‘We are going to do everything we can give this dog the absolute best life because he deserves it,'” Wichita Animal Action LeagueCo-Founder Sarah Coffman told The Dodo.

Bowie spent the next week in the hospital receiving 24-hour care.

After that, he was brought to a foster home where he was taken care of by Lee and Darcy.

Bowie spent the next two months putting on weight and growing healthy and strong. Poor Bowie would gobble up his food so fast that it had to be put in slow feeders so that he wouldn’t eat so fast.

Coffman really felt for the sweet pittie who had been so badly abused. So, she wanted to make sure he had the best care possible.

Coffman was hesitant about sending him off to his next foster home with Connie and her husband Matt.

But that all changed when she rolled up in their driveway and saw a sign on her door that said. “Welcome Bowie!”

“I was just like, ‘Oh my God. This is where he needs to be,” Coffman said.

Connie says it was Bowie’s big beautiful eye that she first fell in love with.

“I sent Matt a text and I was like, ‘Can we keep him?’ and he was like, ‘I can’t believe it took you two days to ask,'” Connie recalled.

Bowie did very well in Connie and Matt’s care. He gained weight and was growing in strength and stamina.

Bowie was so weak he wasn’t able to walk a lot and had to learn how to run.

Matt started slowly with bringing Bowie on 20-yard walks. After a few weeks, Bowie was able to walk around the whole block.

“When he first started running, and realizing he could run, it was kind of like a baby learning how to walk,” said Connie. “And the more he does it the more he enjoys it. He’s like the Energizer Bunny, honestly. He’s like a racehorse.”

Bowie will run around with his zoomies every day, whether it’s hot or cold. Bowie doesn’t care. He was running.

Bowie is finally living the good life as a happy dog.

His favorite thing to do is go out for a Pup Cone at Andy’s. Mom takes him every week.

“He held his head so low before and how he stands tall and proud,” said Connie. “he can be a dog again and that’s really all he wanted. The chance to be a dog.”

Bowie now has more than 10,000 followers on his very own Instagram page where he is described as, “Ambassador of kindness and hope. Lover of zooms, puppies & frozen custard.”
