Seventeen years ago, a woman named Kellen adopted a tiny, sickly kitten from a shelter. The kitten was born deaf, and he was in such bad shape, even the veterinarian said he was untreatable. But the cat, who Kellen named Darwin, hung on, and he made it through those rough first few months. Soon, he had grown into a healthy young cat.

From the beginning, Darwin was a sweet, loving, and selfless cat. Kellen told Love Meow:

“He lets my fosters steal his food. Every person and animal he meets is a friend.”

Even though Darwin is now seventeen years old, he still’s still very sweet. He loves meeting new people, and he always tries to bring a smile to their face.

Kellen often brings Darwin with her to her local park, where they go for walks together. They aren’t able to walk as far now that Darwin is a senior—he has arthritis, which prevents him from walking long distances. But he still loves sitting in the sunshine and meeting all the people at the park.

In June 2017, shortly after Darwin’s seventeenth birthday, Kellen took him to the park like usual. As they walked along the path, they spotted an elderly woman who was sitting on her own. The woman was 85-year-old Lida, who was from Uzbekistan. She was sitting on a bench, lost in her thoughts. But once she spotted Darwin, her expression immediately changed:

“She was just sitting by the pond… she saw Darwin and lit right up,” Kellen said.

She slowly and unsteadily got off the bench and went over to Darwin. Darwin was sweet like usual, and he let Lida pet and cuddle him.

As she played with Darwin, Lida told Kellen about her own cat, who had sadly passed away when he was 12 years old. Seeing Darwin brought back all of her happy memories of her own cat.

Darwin purred and cuddled up against Lida. Both of them were like kids again!

“I was trying to choke back a lump in my throat the entire time she was with us,” Kellen said. “Darwin is a natural healer and caretaker… in his world, there is no fear, no enemies, and no strangers. Even people who don’t like cats often like him, and other cats who are cat aggressive don’t have a problem with him. Lida seemed withdrawn, sitting with her arms around her knees when I first saw her… interacting with Darwin, she really shone.”

Kellen gave Lida her address, and they made plans for her to play with Darwin again. As Kellen left, Lida looked years younger than she had when Kellen first saw her. She looked happy.
