Every pet owner wants their pet to live a long, happy life. The owners of a sweet white cat named Rascal got to experience this. The cat was 20 years old and still doing very well. He had gone deaf, but he didn’t have any other health issues.
In January 2018, Rascal and his owners moved from Pennsylvania to Virginia. And that’s when the trouble began.
After living for so many years in the same place, Rascal was naturally confused to find himself in a new home, and he started having accidents around the house. Rascal’s owners decided this was too much for them to deal with, and they surrendered him to the Spotsylvania Animal Shelter. On his intake paperwork, they wrote they were surrendering him for “being old and having accidents in the house.”
The shelter workers were shocked when they learned how old Rascal was, and they knew they wanted to get him into a new forever home as quickly as possible.
Shelter workers posted a video of sweet Rascal on Spotsylvania Animal Shelter’s Facebook page. In the video, they discussed why Rascal would make such a good pet.
“Someone out there has got to take pity on me,” ‘Rascal’ said in the video. “I’m a very sweet boy, I’m deaf so I don’t really listen well…again, I’m 20, stuck in a shelter, please someone come break me out of here.”
The video of Rascal quickly went viral, receiving more than 200,000 views. Because of this video, Rascal only ended up spending one night in the shelter.
The day after Rascal was surrendered, a woman named Meredith Bauer said she would adopt the cat. When a worker brought Rascal out, he was withdrawn and nervous—he still didn’t understand what he was doing in the shelter. But after Meredith spent some time cuddling with him, he began to perk up!
Meredith took Rascal home that day. The cat quickly settled into life in his new home.
Rascal got along well with Meredith’s other cats, and he also enjoyed hanging out with his new mom. He often napped in Meredith’s lap or on the couch next to her.
Meredith also took Rascal on lots of adventures. Rascal loved exploring the great outdoors.
Unfortunately, Rascal passed away in June 2018 from cancer. Meredith posted a touching tribute to her beloved cat on his Facebook page.
“These last months, he surpassed many odds and found his way into my family’s hearts,” Meredith wrote. “There will never be another cat quite like him. He has left a huge hole in our hearts even though he had only been with us a short time.”
Meredith made Rascal’s last six months truly great, and we’re so glad the cat found such a wonderful home. If you want to see more photos of sweet Rascal and Meredith’s other cats, check out her Facebook page.
