Bijou the cat has a routine she always sticks to.
The senior black cat patiently waits outside her house, watching the street. She sits there until she finally sees her favorite person pull up: her local mailman, Mike McEuen.
As soon as Bijou sees McEuen, she runs up to him and greets him with the biggest hug.
There are a few dogs that regularly greet McEuen on his route, but Bijou is the only cat who is always excited to see him.
“There are a few dogs on my routes that I really love seeing, and a couple that seem to know the sound of my truck’s door sliding open,” McEuen told The Dodo. “However, Bijou is the only cat I have on my routes that seems to make it a point to visit every time I am there.”
Bijou and McEuen first met four years ago, when McEuen started his new route. She had a milky eye and was clearly a senior, but she still had tons of love to give.
“The first time I met her, my first impression was that she was a super old, sweet kitty that looks to have been through it all,” McEuen said. “I told the regular carrier on the route about it and he told me, ‘Yeah, that’s Bijou. She’s the best!’”
McEuen works as a substitute mail carrier, and he takes over the routes for other mailmen on their days off. He does five different routes, and so he only sees Bijou once a week. But Bijou makes that weekly visit count—she spends as much time as she can with McEuen before he has to head off.
Bijou also loves spending time in McEuen’s truck—she’s made herself at home on his passenger seat.
“Sometime toward the end of last year, she started getting more exploratory with my truck,” McEuen said. “After a couple months of sniffing around the door, she started climbing in and milling around on the floorboards. That quickly evolved into her getting all comfy on the seat.”
Before Bijou says goodbye to McEuen, she always makes sure he gives her some special attention.
She won’t let McEuen leave until he’s given her a few good pats on the head and a few hugs. Once Bijou feels that McEuen has given her the right amount of attention, she’ll wander back to her house, feeling content.
McEuen always enjoys seeing Bijou, and he loves that she’s so happy to spend time with him.
“Most cats seem content doing their own thing and keeping to themselves,” McEuen said. “I like to think Bijou looks forward to the mailmen showing up as much as we look forward to being greeted by her!”
McEuen is a kindhearted animal lover who always makes time for the animals on his route. He and Bijou are the purr-fect pair!
