In 2014, George lost his best friend Blackie the lab. The two had been together for 12 years, and they did everything together. George was devastated by his loss.

In the two years after Blackie’s death, George barely ate, and he lost interest in everything. George’s owner, Jacquie Litton, was very worried about him.

“He’s almost died twice. He doesn’t eat, starves himself, anxiety and a multitude of skin conditions from chewing on himself,” Litton told Inside Edition.

But then, something surprising happened. One day, a duck wandered onto Litton’s porch. The duck and George immediately hit it off!

The duck seemed to sense that George needed help. The duck laid down next to George and cuddled with him. As the days went by, the dog and the duck got more and more comfortable with each other. George was grateful to have the duck by his side—he hasn’t cried once since the duck appeared.

“Since the duck has showed up, he’s been fine,” Litton told WKOW. “He’s not wanted in the house. He’s not whined. He’s not meeting you at the car, ya know, looking sad.”

Litton decided to officially add the duck to her family. She gave the duck a name, Donald. She also built him a beautiful bird bath.

George and Donald now spend most of their time together. They often take naps together on George’s dog bed, and George even lets Donald rest his beak on his leg.

“It is strange for a duck to just appear at our house and be attached to your dog and even more strangely the anniversary week of Blackie’s passing,” Litton says.

Litton says that George and Donald will often walk around the backyard and chat with each other, with George barking and Donald quacking. She says it really sounds like they’re having a conversation!

Litton is so happy that Donald appeared in their lives and gave George the companionship he’s been looking for since he lost Blackie.

“They’re totally different species, and they found company and comfort in each other,” Litton says.
