The sea is mysterious, and it’s home to a lot of strange things. Whether it be bizarre dino-like mammals or weird, jelly-like fish, when you visit the sea, you never know what to expect. This past October, environmental workers in Turkey were working at clearing the Golden Horn inlet of trash when they discovered a very strange sight.

The various workers were on an Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality boat. They had been hired to remove junk from the sea in an effort to boost environmentalism in the area. They had been picking garbage up out of the water for hours when they finally looked up and saw a cat swimming in the middle of the sea.

The crew doesn’t know how she ended up getting so far into the water— more than a mile off the coast— but the poor water-logged kitty appeared to be getting progressively more tired as she struggled to keep herself afloat. As her little body paddled in the water, circling seagulls kept descending and pecking at her small frame.

It’s unclear how long the cat had been swimming, but the crew said it looked like she had been at it for a while. As her tiny head dipped and bobbed above the water, the workers knew they had to step in and help.

First, they grabbed a net, trying to scoop the exhausted kitty from the waves. Every time they got close to catching her, though, she would somehow squirm out of their grasp.

After wasting a few precious minutes with the net, they decided they would need to change tactics. Instead of the net, the workers decided to try the conveyor belt used to remove solid waste from the water. They had no idea if it would work, but they knew they had to give it a shot.

The workers slowly lowered the conveyor belt into the sea water, trying to aim it in the cat’s direction. After a few seconds, they were incredibly relieved to see her latch onto the belt and make her way up its surface. With a bit of quick thinking and ingenuity, the rescuers had succeeded in saving her life.

According to reports, the cat was dropped off in the Ayvansaray district of Istanbul. Upon examination, the vet said she appeared to be in remarkably good health— despite the strains of her deep-sea adventure.
