Dolphins are believed to be some of the smartest creatures out there, and they have been studied for decades as their behavior has drawn the interest of researchers, biologists, and writers, who were attracted by the “sacred fish’s” nature and wanted to include them in their books.

According to scientists, some wild dolphins tend to develop a special bond with humans in the ocean. Why is that?

Well, the reason seems to be “the phenomenon of lone sociable dolphins”, meaning that the large sea mammals have the need for social interaction, and when they cannot find it in their own kind they seek it from humans.

It has been said that dolphins often behave towards humans in the same way as they would do with fellow dolphins. It seems, in other words, that they cannot always differentiate between their own kind and humans. In fact, they might consider us a weird kind of dolphins!

So, if dolphins can form such strong bonds with humans, then why not start socializing with man’s best friend, too? And by that, we mean dogs of course!

In fact, there have been reported cases so far of dolphins that befriended dogs, like a recent example from Florida, where Gunner the dog and Delta the dolphin have built a friendship over the last few years. Also, Ben the dog and Duggie the dolphin have been unlikely friends for a while.

The latest viral encounter between a friendly dolphin and a dog comes in the form of a Facebook video, which was recently uploaded by Magen Peigelbeck on her account and has taken the Internet by storm.

A few weeks ago, Peigelbeck and her two lovely dogs, Miles and Stanley, went on a boat trip in a river near the coast of Georgia. They were enjoying the sea and the time they had together when a visitor appeared.

It was a dolphin that seemed determined to join the three of them! The adorable creature started following their boat and kept popping its head out of the water as if to say “hi” to the dogs that were watching in shock. Miles and Stanley, who by no means expected this encounter, started barking, but the beautiful dolphin didn’t stop trying. It kept coming back to greet them over and over again.

The video was shared through Peigelbeck on the Facebook account of a local news channel and it soon went viral. So far it has been viewed by almost 6 million people, while 74k people have reacted to it and thousands have commented.

Some Facebook users focused on the fact that dolphins are smart creatures and particularly friendly towards humans.

“Dolphins are my favorite! They pop up to say hello,” someone commented. “They are credited with saving humans from drowning!”

Others focused on how special the moment was and how they feel about it.

“if I saw this I’d die from happiness,” someone wrote, while someone else commented: “y’all I would have absolutely freaked out”!

As Peigelbeck told The Dodo, it was indeed a very special moment for her and her dogs. However, she admitted the dolphin didn’t care about her- it just approached the boat to see her pups.

We may not know if Peigelbeck and her dogs will ever have the chance to live a similar experience, but we can be sure they will cherish the moment forever.
