Dogs are smarter than we often give them credit for.
They can learn, remember, and pick up on things that seem beyond their capabilities as dogs.
For one pair of golden retrievers, figuring out how to get what they want just takes a bit of scheming.
Their names are Bleu and Colby and they’ll stop at nothing to get extra treats and food–even if that means breaking into the toddler’s room at 6:00 a.m. and leading her to the food stash.
Luckily for us, the entire toddler-heist was caught on the security camera in her room.
In the video below, you can watch as Colby and Bleu first find a way to open up the toddler’s door.
This on its own is pretty impressive, as my childhood dog lived in our house for 15 years and never once figured out how to use a door handle.
The two golden pups make their way into the toddler’s room and waste no time waking her up.
One of them hops up onto the bed while the other reaches its big head over the side of the bed railing.
They both commence licking the toddler’s face and wagging their tails.
This arouses the toddler and she sits up in bed.
The dogs lick her face again and then walk out the door, apparently assuming that the toddler was going to follow them.
When she just sits in her bed without moving, one of the dogs decides to go back into her room and lick her face once more–trying to pass on the message that she should follow them.
As one dog is walking out, the other dog comes back in to try the same tactic.
It goes up to the toddler, who seems very much awake at this point, and gives her a few licks.
Satisfied that their message was received, the two dogs walk out of the room again.
The toddler is then left sitting alone on her bed.
She decides to get out of bed and walks over to the edge where she can escape.
This is about the time when parents really worry.
I mean, what’s the use of a baby-cam if you can’t stop your baby from falling out of their enclosures?
The dogs come back in as she reaches the edge and reminds her one more time of her objective—give them some breakfast.
The toddler pushes aside the big stuffed animal that is blocking her exit and finds her way to the floor.
She follows the dogs out the door and–hopefully, for the dogs’ sake–feeds them some treats.
Her mother woke up to find her walking around the hallway soon thereafter, a bit confused about how her toddler managed to open a door handle that she couldn’t even reach.
It wasn’t until they looked back on the footage that the parents learned of their clever dogs’ sneaky tactics to get themselves some early morning treats.
You can’t really fault the toddler or even the dogs for doing what they did.
They just wanted some treats and knew that they could convince the toddler of the house with a few kisses and tail wags.
