Maggie, an Australian shepherd, wasn’t about to let something as trivial as a kennel door get in the way of making sure some puppies had all the love and care they needed.

Maggie had been staying at Barker’s Pet Motel and Grooming in St. Albert, Canada.

That’s when two puppies were brought in by the Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society (AARCS).

The pet motel will sometimes take in rescued animals if the AARCS or other groups don’t have enough foster homes available.

After the puppies got settled in, owner Sandi Aldred left for the evening.

She was using her live camera feed to check in on the kennel when she saw that Maggie got loose.

Maggie heard the puppies crying and busted out of her kennel to comfort them.

Maggie was able to sneak out of her kennel after pushing her water bowl aside and squeezing through the opening.

She was sitting right outside of the pen where the puppies were being kept, pacing back and forth and trying to get close to the little babies inside.

“We watched her on the cameras, and she went straight around, and she found their room. She paid them a lot of attention, and you could see her little tail wagging. And she’d do the little bow down to them and poke them through the chainlink gate of their room,” Aldred said.

Aldred returned to check on Maggie and her newly adopted puppies to find a very happy Maggie.

“It was really sweet. She just had to be with those puppies. She came to me, and she was really happy, and then she took me back to their room as if to say, ‘I really need to meet these puppies,’ ” Aldred said.

Apparently, the feeling was mutual.

The puppies seemed to be just as happy to be with Maggie as she was to be with them.

“She was nuzzling them really gently and nudging them, and then she laid down and let them cuddle with her,” Aldred said. “The puppies needed her and she needed them. It was pretty perfect.”

Aldred let Maggie spend the night with the puppies and found them all cozied up the next morning.

Unfortunately, Maggie’s parents had to pick her up the next day. They weren’t at all shocked to hear about her escapades.

She had been rescued from the Edmonton Humane Society.

She had been staying at the shelter where the litter of puppies she gave birth to.

After her puppies were adopted, the shelter said she had started parenting another litter of puppies at the shelter before her current parents adopted her.

So, her parents are aware of the fact that Maggie is a very good girl.

Aldred said she made sure that the puppies got extra attention after Maggie went home.

“A lot of our staff have fallen in love with them, so they’ll take them home in the evenings and let them have a home environment for the night,” Aldred sai.d

They’ll be ready to be put up for adoption shortly.
