It was supposed to be just another Friday morning for animal control officers in Kingsville, Texas.

But that’s kind of a misnomer because when you’re an animal control officer in Texas, no day on the job is ever really normal!

Even the stray dogs are fiercely tough hombre’s, especially this pup, who was found standing guard over his sister’s lifeless body.

“This boy wasn’t going to let anyone mess with his sister.”

Kingsville Kleberg Animal Control Officers are used to doing “only in Texas” activities, like scooping up fresh armadillo roadkill off the road or reigning in runaway cattle.

However, nothing could prepare them for this encounter with a heartbroken stray doggo, who refused to leave his sister’s body as she lay unmoving on the side of the road.

When Kingsville Kleberg Animal Control received a call about a deceased dog that was spotted on the side of a 2-lane country road, it should have been an open and shut case. The poor pooch had most likely been hit by a car, which is a sadly common occurrence in every part of the world.

However, it wasn’t until officers arrived on the scene that they realized this wasn’t going to be an easy clean-up job after all.

It quickly became apparent that this hit-and-run victim had an angel standing guard over her body – and he wasn’t about to let anyone touch her!

The Kingsville Kleberg Animal Control shared the story in a Facebook post, with the hopes that people would understand the heartbreak that their officers have to face on a daily basis.

“This was the scene our Animal Control Officers drove up to. This boy wasn’t going to let anyone mess with his sister. Our ACOs had a hard time convincing him everything was going to be alright and they were there to help him.”

Thankfully the 27-pound Catahoula mix, who was only about 6 months old, relented his post and backed down when he realized these rescuers meant no harm.

Unlike the tool who hit his sister and sped off like a coward, these guys actually wanted to help!

“This call was one of the most heart wrenching for our staff, but we thought we’d share some behind the scene images of situations they are faced with on a regular basis. Staff has decided to name the survivor Guardian.”

Guardian was taken into the animal shelter and given the all-clear by vets. Since they didn’t know if the puppy actually belonged to anyone, he was held there for 4 days as a stray, per regulations.

“This is Guardian! He’s still a little confused about what happened, but at least he is now in a safe place with fresh cool water and belly full of food. He is listed as a Catahoula mix and is estimated to be 6-12 months old. He weighs 27 lbs.”

In an updated Facebook post, the animal control center said that Guardian, who won over everyone’s hearts, has already been scheduled to be adopted by loving forever family.

Whoever this family is, they should consider themselves super blessed to have a guardian angel like this little guy in their lives.
