The loyalty of dogs is well-known. Nicknamed ‘man’s best friend’, dogs are pack animals that need to belong to a group. Sure, humans like to make themselves feel better by saying they’re our best friend— but in the end, I think dogs are dogs’ best friend, and the following story may prove it.

Three years ago, No Kill Kern, a volunteer rescue in Bakersfield, California, got an alarming call about a dog. In the video’s on-screen text, the uploader revealed:

“We received a call for help about a dog who had been living in a field for over two months.”

The volunteers at the rescue took down the caller’s information and immediately went into action. The temperature that day was hot, measuring 102°F, but that didn’t stop the rescuers from attempting to save the poor, abandoned creature. When they arrived on the scene, however, they realized how daunting their task would be. “The search area was huge,” the video explains. “But we knew she [the dog] was always close by, so we began to track her.”

“We followed her tracks behind a cornfield where we began to understand just how hard this would be.”

The volunteers worked tirelessly attempting to track the dog. They were almost ready to call it quits when they suddenly spotted her:

“When we had almost given up hope for the day, she appeared in the field where she lived.”

The rescuers wanted to know why the dog kept coming back to this spot— but when they got a little closer, the answer broke their heart.

Turns out the dog’s friend had died when it was hit by a car. Still, the dog kept returning to that spot to honor her fallen, doggy companion. Every single night, the abandoned dog would sleep with her friend’s bones, refusing to leave her side until both of them were rescued.

“Not even death could stop her loyalty.”

The rescuers couldn’t catch the loyal dog. But, upon their return a few days later, they finally got her into a crate.

In the video, the rescuers wrote: “We took her straight to our vet to have her checked out, health as can be.”

“As we removed her from the kennel, her tail began to wag.”

“She was full of joy and immediately showered us in love.”

The dog was named Hachika after Hachiko, a canine praised in Japanese culture for his loyalty and fidelity. After being rescued, she was adopted into a loving home where she now has a doggy best friend.
