A dog named Da Huang lost its owner due to illness- but don’t tell him that.
The pup has been waiting at the man’s (known only as Mr. Shen) worksite in Shenyang, China for years waiting to be reunited with him.
Regardless of the weather, the dog has come to find its owner every day for 5 straight years.
Now its story is going viral because of the heartbreaking loyalty.
Man’s best friend
According to The Daily Mail, Da Huang had been a stray before being adopted by Mr. Shen in 2012.
He found the dog trying to steal a bite of his dinner and took pity on the creature, said Liaoshen Evening News.
It sounds like it’s a gesture Da Huang never forgot as the two forged a bond that the pup couldn’t sever even at the end of life.
While he didn’t go home with his master, Shen let the dog live in his office and would feed and bathe it regularly.
Each morning, Da Huang would greet the man with a wagging tail when he came to work.
Shen worked as a parking lot attendant at an apartment complex in northeastern China’s Liaoning Province and his pet acted as an “assistant” of sorts, following him around and even barking to alert him of vehicles he didn’t recognize.
An unexpected happening
Shen was diagnosed with illness which had already progressed so far that he passed away within two weeks of finding out.
There was no closure for Da Huang, nor were arrangements made for his care since it all happened so fast.
So the dog continues to wait for him each day in the parking lot.
Eventually, residents got a sense of what was going on and took pity on the creature, especially since it sniffs everyone who comes by to see if they might be his long-lost owner.
“After realizing it wasn’t Mr. Shen, Da Huang would slowly walk back with its head down,” a neighbor told Liaoshen Evening News.
The long wait
Neighbors weren’t sure how long the dog would stick around, but once they realized he was there permanently, they banded together to ensure he had food and shelter.
They built a doghouse at the apartment complex and someone brings him food each day.
But while some had tried to adopt Da Huang, he refuses. He’s still waiting for Mr. Shen to return.
One neighbor told reporters:
“I took Da Huang home. It was quite cooperative at first, but at 3 o’clock in the afternoon the next day, it started beating the door, barking, and going out. Unsurprisingly, it ran towards the north gate when it left the door, and stopped there when it reached the door.”
That’s where Mr. Shen would have been if he were still alive.
“We don’t look at it as a dog anymore, it is our neighbor,” said the residents.
One neighbor goes to the market every day to get the dog fresh lamb’s liver or goat’s milk.
Another made sure the doghouse was winterized so that the pup wouldn’t freeze. Since Da Huang is harmless, the neighbors are happy to let it stay.
