Dogs, like humans, have unique personalities. Some are wild and playful, while others are calmer and reserved. In some cases, they might need a little extra care before they can feel secure.
This is the story of a dog that got a huge break in life after being rescued from an abusive past. He finally met a person who completely understood him.
Sean Farrell got word of a Staffordshire Bull Terrier called Buster, who needed a place to stay after being rescued from a bad home. At first, Sean only agreed to be a foster for the dog while his rescuers tried to find a new home for him.
Things didn’t go as planned. Sean couldn’t let go of Buster after spending time with him and decided to adopt him as his own.
However, there was a problem. The dog’s dark past was making it hard for him to trust Sean. Buster felt uncomfortable being in the same room as him. When Sean woke up in the morning and went downstairs, Buster would go upstairs. When Sean went upstairs to sleep, Buster would make his way downstairs to avoid being near Sean.
The only time Buster would come to him was when it was time to eat or go for walks. What’s even more surprising is that Buster didn’t mind being around guests. So when anyone came over to see Sean, Buster would come down to join them and leave when the guests left.
Luckily, Sean has a big heart. Over the more than two years that he has owned Buster, Sean has helped the dog deal with some of his fears through training while also respectfully giving Buster the space he needs to cope.
It seems to have worked. Buster improved so much that he now works as a therapy dog. Buster and Sean will often visit residential homes and a brain injury clinic near their area. Buster also accompanies people who struggle socially, suffer from anxiety, and have autism. With all the hard work that Buster had been doing lately, Sean felt it only fair to reward him somehow.
Home is Where the Heart is
Sean had the idea to build a tiny house for buster in their living room. This way, Buster would have a place where he felt safe in the house whether or not Sean was in the room. He wanted something that Buster could feel was fully his.
With no previous carpentry experience, Sean bought some wood and plywood and just winged it. It took him four days to put together Buster’s new house, but Buster wasn’t allowed to use it for at least two weeks to give the paint and carpet adhesive time to dry.
The results were amazing. It almost looks like something only a professional could create. It has a fan, a nice comfy bed, a window looking out into the living room, mood lighting, and a few odd toys all over the place.
Naturally, Buster loved it.
Sean feels it was a great success. Buster is slowly starting to feel more comfortable at home. What’s more, the internet loved the project and shared it everywhere.
