Workers near the town of Suwalki in Poland were walking down a forest road when they started hearing panicked barking.

The workers walked in the direction of the barking, and they came across a shocking sight. They found a dog completely trapped in a puddle of tar.

The poor little pup was barking as loud as he could, and he was clearly scared. The workers tried to get the dog out, but he was completely stuck. And so, one of the workers called Joanna Godlewska, an animal rescuer from the Niczyje Animal Foundation.

Godlewska rushed over to the wooded area to help the dog.

“When I finally arrived and saw a dog lying in the tar, tears came to my eyes,” Godlewska told The Dodo.

Godlewska decided to name the dog Farcik. She guessed that Farcik was abandoned in the woods and had gone searching for somewhere warm to lay down. He chose the tar puddle, not knowing how dangerous it was.

Godlewska knew she had to work quickly to free Farcik. It was clear the dog wasn’t going to be able to make it much longer.

Godlewska called the fire department, and using a ton of dish soap, they freed the dog. The dog quieted down as the firefighters and Godlewska rubbed soap into his fur—he seemed to realize they were there to help him.

“He understood that we were saving him,” Godlewska said.

After using multiple bottles of soap, Godlewska was finally able to pull Farcik out of the tar.

Once Farcik was free, Godlewska rushed him to the vet. There, he was treated for exhaustion. He also received treatment for a few superficial injuries on the side of his face. The vet also finished cleaning little Farcik—by the end of the appointment, he felt much better.

Godlewska took Farcik home and gave him all the love and care he deserved.

“He feels better and better,” Godlewska said.

Farcik went back to the vet a few times for more cleaning sessions. With Godlewska’s love and care, he got stronger and stronger.

Farcik is also learning to trust people again. Once he’s strong enough, Godlewska will begin looking for the right forever home for him.

“I just wanted to save him,” Godlewska said. “Thank you to everyone who saved this dog.”

Farcik almost lost his life in the tar puddle, but thankfully some kind people came along at the right time. We’re so glad Farcik is doing well!
