It is heartbreaking that in a world where people are fighting for rights and freedom, there are still human beings that mistreat animals.

Whether you love animals or not, it is important to recognize their right to live happy lives with the people that decide to take on the responsibility of becoming their owners.

Animals should be treated with respect and love, no matter what. They are not stuffed toys that we buy as presents and then, when we don’t like them anymore, just throw them away. They have a heart and it can easily be broken if we don’t treat them properly.

However, there are still people among us who consider animals disposable and treat them as such.

Like a couple from Roselle, New Jersey, who tied their husky in the backyard and left him there when they left for another state.

Yes, you read that correctly. The young couple moved houses and, with their new home being in a different state, thought it was a good idea to leave the dog behind until they could go back and take it with them.

And, while it is unclear whether they would eventually return for the dog, the poor husky was left tied and alone for five whole days.

According to reporters, a 27-year-old man and his 29-year-old girlfriend owned the beautiful husky, Carter, formerly known as Jon Snow, and shared with him their New Jersey home.

However, the couple decided to move states and they thought it was a good idea to leave their pet behind for a while. The young couple let the neighbors know they were leaving and that they would eventually come back for Carter, but five days later they hadn’t returned.

That’s when animal control was called in order to investigate the case.

What made matters worse was that Carter had a serious wound on his neck and he had to be taken to the Associated Humane Societies Newark facility.

According to the Popcorn Park Animal Refuge, Carter was taken to the Newark Branch of Associated Humane Societies of New Jersey to have his wound taken care of, and he was then transferred to another shelter so he could further recover.

According to the sanctuary, the dog has been receiving laser treatment, as well as medication for pain and infection, and he has been doing very well lately.

Carter is a lucky boy! Although his owners severely abused and neglected him, he is now with people who love him and take good care of him.

As for his owners? The couple is facing criminal charges.

An investigation is still being carried out, but the couple could be facing “convictions of third-degree crimes against Carter that could lead to up to a 5-year sentence in state prison.”

Those interested, could sign a petition about Carter’s owners not deserving a plea deal. As it is explained in the petition, Carter, who is still recovering, will not be up for adoption until the investigation of the case has been completed.

Carter was a lucky dog and he didn’t die a lonely and painful death in an empty backyard. But, unlike him, many dogs suffer daily and it is crucial that we prevent such situations. Let’s just hope things will get better soon.
