Dogs are some of the most compassionate and loving creatures on the planet. They are known as “man’s best friend” because of their unwavering loyalty. The same applies to their bond with other dogs as well.
Two dogs had wandered around the streets of Rome for years, they were the best of friends — until the very end. Their photo is touching hearts across the world.

On September 20th, the black dog had been struck and killed by a car. His light-colored friend refused to leave his side — he stood guard over his deceased friend as cars passed all around them.
Drivers in the area say that the sandy-colored dog stayed and watched over his friend for a few hours. They had started to cause quite the scene and drivers slowly drove past to see what was going on.
Locals recognized the dogs and said they were inseparable. Their photos are bringing tears to the eyes of every animal lover.
Marco Milani, an Italian local, told a Rome news agency about the moment he noticed the grieving dog and his deceased friend.
“I was taking my daughter to school and got trapped in a jam. At first, I thought there was an accident but then I noticed the dog,” Marco said. “He was there in the middle of the road, still and looking after his friend, who had probably been killed in a hit-and-run.”
Eyewitnesses say that they saw the dogs on Rome’s busy Via Tuscolana around 5 in the morning.
“Here, everyone recalls the two dogs often playing together in the street,” said Marco.
Marco didn’t take the pictures to be cruel, he wanted to show the world how compassionate this dog was, in hopes of finding him a home.
Thankfully — Marco’s tactic worked. It wasn’t long before people everywhere were wanting to take the beautiful, heartbroken dog into their family.
“Dozens have offered to adopt him,” Marco says.
Although we don’t have official word, we are confident that the sweet dog has ended up with a family that can provide him with the love and safety he deserves.
Although the photos are hard to view, they are true testaments as to how incredible and compassionate dogs can be. It’s a lesson that humankind can learn from.
