Herschel the German Shepherd’s first five years of life were very tough.
The poor dog spent most of those years chained up in a dirt-filled backyard. When rescuers found him, the dog’s teeth were whittled down—he was so desperate for freedom, he had tried to chew through the metal chain.
Eventually, his former owner did the right thing and surrendered Herschel to Michelson Found Animals. The animal rescue gave the pup the medical attention and care that he badly needed.
Over the next few months, Herschel was adopted and returned to the shelter multiple times. Since the dog had spent his first few years chained up without any socialization, he had trouble adjusting to his new homes.
Michelson Found Animals wanted to get Herschel into a loving, wonderful home. So they reached out to Rocky Kanaka, host of Dog’s Day Out. This show takes dogs who’ve had tough lives and gives them a great day out.
For Herschel’s fun day out, Rocky bought him lots of delicious food, including a tasty doggy cupcake. Rocky also Herschel took him to play in the snow, and he loved it!
One Dog’s Day Out viewer absolutely fell in love with Herschel, and she decided to adopt him. She lived in Los Angeles, and so Rocky and Herschel embarked on a road trip to his new home.
While they were on the road trip, Rocky stopped at a beach so Herschel could see the ocean for the first time in his life. Rocky and Herschel walked onto the sand, and Herschel started barking in pure joy. Rocky was thrilled to see how happy this sweet boy was!
Rocky and Herschel played on the sand and in the waves. Rocky had a huge grin on his face as he and the pup played in the warm water.
“He loves it and I won’t let him go cause he might swim off to San Diego for all I know,” Rocky said.
Herschel is now happily living with his mom in Los Angeles, and he’s able to go to the beach as much as he wants. This sweet dog can’t enough of the ocean, and after everything he went through, he deserves to spend as much time in the water as he’d like!
