This is Zeppole. He’s a fun, friendly, sweet dog with a lot to give. I’m sure he means the world to his mom and family, and he probably never means any harm.
There’s just one problem. Zeppole is a Golden retriever, and retrievers love water.
And “love” is an understatement. Retrievers see water and beeline for it like a bear to honey. Water is life, and nothing can get in their way.
Not even the neighbor’s fence got in the way for Zeppole.
The dog just went right over the fence and helped himself to the neighbor’s pool.
He really acts like it’s his pool. All that goes on in Zeppole’s head is “Water good” and “Make people happy”. He’s much too pure for concepts like “trespassing” and “legal home ownership.”
Golden and Labrador retrievers were bred to be alongside duck hunters. And no matter how many generations of the breed we make, that insatiable desire for a body of water never went away.
Thankfully, Zeppole’s neighbors are very good friends with his mom.
They’re nearly as fond of him as she is, and they’d be amused if anything.
But Zeppole still has to learn boundaries and asking for permission. So his mom had to follow him to the neighbor’s house and give him an affectionate scolding.
This wouldn’t be the first time the rambunctious retriever was in the neighbor’s pool.
A year earlier, the neighbor’s let him swim to his heart’s content. His mom was invited, and it was probably the best day of his life.
And I suppose he never stopped thinking about the pool from that day on. It’s pretty hard to when they live right next to it.
Zeppole jumped into that pool like a soldier returning from deployment to meet his wife again.
They’d been separated for a lifetime in dog years, and it felt oh so good to be together again.
When the cool splash hit his fur, and as his body submerged in the good stuff, he never wanted to get out.
It was cute, but not something his mom wanted him to get in the habit of doing.
She tried everything to stop him from climbing over the fence.
Removing the bins he was stepping on wasn’t an option. She placed obstacles in the way to block his entry, but he powered through them as quickly as his mom placed them.
Zeppole’s undying love for the pool did pay off eventually.
During the last days of summer before the pool closed, his mom made an arrangement with the neighbors.
The arrangement was simple: one final day of the summer for Zeppole to play in the pool as much as he wants.
The neighbor’s enthusiastically agreed, and even organized a playdate with their own dog – who also happened to be a retriever.
And the day when spectacularly. Zeppole was the happiest dog on the planet. That pool meant the world to him, so it was nice to give him one last date with it before it closed for the summer.
