This was so fun watching him dash through the house to find her.

Not all beagles like sleeping on the roofs of their dog-houses. Sorry Snoopy! In fact, as dogs go, they’re actually pretty good workers. There’s a reason why you tend to see them working in airports and border crossings, and that’s because of their olfactory blessings. As Dogtime.com describes them:

“Their noses guide them through life, and they’re never happier than when following an interesting scent. The Beagle originally was bred as a scenthound to track small game, mostly rabbits and hare.”

They also happen to be loyal pets.

Which means that they often use their noses for more than just sniffing for contraband and rabbits. Quite often that means that when a long departed owner leaves, they follow their noses with gusto when they catch a whiff of their return. In fact, sometimes they don’t even have to be that long departed to excitedly follow their nose to find the human they’ve been missing.

Bandit had no idea his mom had returned home after being away for two months.

That is until his nose told him so!

Trying to keep Mom’s return a secret, they snuck her into the basement while Bandit was taken outside. They wondered if he would be able to smell her and tell if she was home. Well it only took about one second! He quickly identifies her scent and storms in, following his nose.

Following your nose is no exact art though…

Bandit is hot on the scent as he follows its trail through the house. He rushes up to the door that she came in through, but that’s not the end of the trail. Frantically sniffing around, he gets some hints from his dad and rushes toward the entrance to the basement.

As he and the other beagle rush down the steps, they close in on the target.

They waste no time in getting to mom, storming down into the basement and whipping around the corners.

To find their Mom waiting for them, unaware of the storm of puppy-love she’s about to receive.

They wag their tales feverishly, trying to jump up to her as they become overwhelmed with excitement.

When dogs get excited they just don’t know what to do with themselves.

Bandit practically climbs over his friend in an attempt to get closer to his Mom. This poor woman just returned home to an onslaught of puppy love. How cute is this complete tidal wave of love and affection from these loving doggos.

Attacking her with his tongue, Bandit tries to lick her. He’s just so excited about her return.

Well she really knows what it means to be loved if she returns home to a welcome party like that. It seems like dogs have no concept of object permanence. If they don’t see you for a while they probably presume you’re dead. Looking at how Bandit is reacting to her return, it seems like he never expected to see her again. But he is just so happy to have her back.
