Saby is a clever and brave German Shepherd who works as a K9 dog. Saby has been part of the Birmingham Police SRT K9 Unit since May 2019, and he has done a great job keeping his community safe.
Saby has had the same handler since he started at the Birmingham Police Department, Officer Dustin Brock. Brock and Saby have formed an incredible bond, and the two have cracked some tough cases together.
In March 2019, Saby made headlines when he helped save an elderly woman with dementia who had gotten lost in the woods.
The woman, 90-year-old Loudell Hubbard, had wandered away from her house without her cane. When she was about a mile-and-a-half from her house, Hubbard fell into a creek bed. She couldn’t get up, and she couldn’t remember how she got to the creek. All she could do was lay there and hope someone would rescue her.
The Birmingham police officers went out to search for Hubbard. They brought Saby with them.
Saby and Brock searched through the woods, trying to find Hubbard. Saby kept his nose to the ground the entire time—he was clearly working as hard as he could to find the elderly woman.
Finally, Saby’s ears perked up, and he started leading Brock to a nearby creek bed.
Brock and the other officer who was searching nearby, Richard Wright, followed Saby. Saby led them to the creek, where Hubbard was laying completely still.
Wright called out to Hubbard and asked if she was okay, and she raised her head. She had been in the creek for more than 12 hours. The officers quickly put her on a stretcher and carried her out of the woods. Everyone was happy to hear she was okay, and Saby was praised as a hero!
“It’s impossible for us to duplicate what he does and do his job as fast as he does,” Brock told WSET.
Hubbard is in the hospital recovering from her ordeal, and thankfully she’s doing well.
“When we got the call I was thinking if it was my grandmother I would hope someone would use all resources to go find her,” Officer Wright said.
Hubbard’s neighbor, Frederick Jones, was also relieved to hear that Hubbard was found. He said he and Hubbard’s other neighbors were elated when they learned that she was okay.
“Joy. It was joy. Everybody was just elated. Everybody was thanking God and just elated. Really it brought tears to your eyes that she was ok,“ Jones says.
Saby is a smart K9 with an incredible nose and some amazing search-and-rescue skills. We’re so glad that Saby was able to find Hubbard. Saby is one great dog!
