When you think of a hero, a muscle-clad man flying through the sky often comes to mind. However, as the following story proves, heroism comes in all shapes and size!
Two weeks ago, Laurie Sorsen Becerra held a play date for her dog Smokey, where she invited his puppy pal Remus to come over and spend the day.
Remus belongs to Laurie’s best friend, and the two dogs often spend their days playing and bouncing around the pool in Laurie’s backyard. Although Smokey is able to swim, he’s not particularly good at it and tends to stick by the stairs at the shallow end. One day, however, Smokey ventured a bit too far and found himself in a dangerous situation. Laurie wasn’t aware of what was happening, but her home security cameras managed to capture the entire event.
During their play date, as the video shows, Smokey gets a bit too close to the edge of the pool and falls into the high waters of the deep end. He struggles to climb out over the edge but can’t seem to pull himself up.
While this is occurring, Remus leaps around the pool with anxiety, waiting for his friend to emerge. When he realizes Smokey can’t get out on his own, he jumps in to save him.
Remus positions himself behind Smokey, using his body and head to push his drowning friend out of the water.
It’s so incredible to see the compassion of animals in action. Remus immediately knew his buddy needed help and did not hesitate to jump in and save him.
When Laurie came out and discovered Smokey soaked and wet, she decided to watch the security cameras to see what had happened.
Since the footage was uploaded to Facebook, it has been viewed over 156,000 times! The story was picked up by outlets including Fox News, KSAT, The Dodo, and more. People are mesmerized by Remus’ compassion and bravery when it came to saving his best friend. Comments on the video read:
“Very good work, dog must care for his buddy.”
“Simply amazing.”
“Oh my gosh. Crying… so, so sweet.”
After everything, Laurie said: “When we saw the footage we were amazed and our hearts filled with joy.”
“My best friend (Remus’ owner) cried when we sent her the video. She says he’s a certified lifeguard now.”
