Dogs have been one of humanity’s most loyal companions for thousands of years.

While it is not known exactly when it happened, many guess that the first domesticated dog was from 23,000 years ago and originated in Siberia.

Nowadays, dogs are the most commonly owned pet in the world, there are an estimated 900 million pet dogs.

There are many reasons why dogs are so popular as pets; they are loyal, friendly, smart and most importantly protective.

That protective instinct has helped save the lives of people from all over the world.

In the video linked below this article, there are many examples of dogs putting themselves in danger in order to protect their person.

The instinct kicks in automatically and immediately for many of the dogs in this video; they notice that something is wrong and act immediately.

When a young boy was playing in his front yard with his dog, an angry neighbourhood decided to set upon the boy.

His dog luckily noticed before any harm could come to the boy.

As he ran away from the approaching menace, the boy tripped and fell but his trusty best friend jumped overtop of the boy and fought off the other dog.

While that happened the young boy’s mother ran forward to scoop up her son and then the neighbor who owned the offending dog managed to get him under control.

In another clip, a man was out for a walk along a forest path with his son when a bear cub approached.

The two walked for a short while before noticing and then the man immediately stopped when he saw the hulking figure coming towards him.

His dog, which resembled a yellow lab, stepped in front of his owner and began barking and growling at the bear.

Luckily, he was able to scare the bear off without any harm coming to any of them.

In another clip, a man had let his pup off leash in a closed-in baseball diamond in order to let the dog run free, when a coyote appeared.

The extremely large coyote hopped over the fence and advanced the on the pair.

The dog didn’t want to fight but knew it had to protect its owner.

Him and the wild animal stared each other down and, as soon as the dog looked away, the coyote advanced.

While the dog was clearly terrified, he turned to meet his foe head-on and protect his human.

Before the pair could begin to fight though, the man managed to scare the wild beast off.

In another clip, a dog was out on the street, minding its own business, when three strays decided to attack him.

The poor dog, who was greatly outnumbered, fought off the 3 strays for over 3 minutes before the trio realized they were not going to win the fight.

While dogs are very strong and protective, they can also be equally as sweet.

One dog was out swimming in a lake when she saw something… a baby duckling.

The duckling had been abandoned and was struggling to survive on its own when the dog crossed paths with it.

The dog gently took hold of the duckling in its mouth and brought it back to dry land.

The dog’s human could be heard in the background, clearly concerned and telling her to drop the duckling; we don’t know what happened, but hopefully, they brought the baby to a vet to be looked after properly.

In a different clip in the video, a dog used all its strength to help pull another dog out of a cold stream where it had been drowning… both dogs survived the event and are doing ok.
