Being in military service means spending months or years apart from family and friends. While technology makes it much easier to stay in touch and keep loved ones updated, nothing beats bridging physical distance and settling back home.
Each family adopts coping strategies for when a member in the military service has to say goodbye once more. This includes establishing a routine that will take some getting used to, like deciding on arrangements for when that family member is headed home and when it’s time to leave again.
These arrangements will help everyone adjust better despite the inevitable fact that saying goodbye will never be easy. Love to Know shares a few helpful tips, such as how to help children through deployment, making special occasions more memorable, maintaining connections by maximizing technology, writing letters and making cards, and more.
These tips may come in handy for everyone in the family, but what about one member who can’t fully grasp what it means to love someone in military service? Your loyal canine companion won’t understand the waiting and the leaving bits.
But they sure know and love the “welcome home” part!
Freyja is a German shepherd dog whose owner was on deployment for nine months. We can’t imagine how both of them adjusted the first time the soldier had to leave. No doubt it was heartbreaking. Perhaps the sweet dog had her ways of dealing with the confusion on why her pet parent was suddenly not around; maybe he was gifted with the strength to cope with everything parting entailed. Who knows?
Freyja carried on wonderfully in true canine fashion, but your heart will melt when you see how she reacts upon seeing him home once again.
The soldier, relieved and happy to be home, was relaxing on the couch when Freyja spotted him again. His eagerness to spoil Freyja with hugs again was no match for her glee.
She bolted and jumped on him, excitedly wriggling closer for cuddles and kisses.
The other dogs in the house joined in, too! It was the best welcome ever. That’s why most people like to think that dogs must have the biggest hearts of all the animals in the world. Just when you feel like the world’s becoming more unpleasant by the day, that no one seems to be there for you, a dog comes around and makes you feel more loved than ever.
There really is no place like home and no best friend quite like a dog.
This soldier sure is lucky to have Freyja in his life. One can only imagine how greatly being in the military service impacts your mental, physical, and emotional well-being. It’s comforting to know that you have such a pure love to come home to. We’re sure the soldier’s heart melted instantly!
