When Monica Burks of Abilene, Texas let her dog Hazel out she figured her dog would go out, do her business, and come back in.
Especially since it was a rainy day. But she didn’t. She was taking a lot longer than normal.
Hazel means a lot to her mom, so Burks when outside to check on her and see what was taking so long.
“My daughter and I rescued Hazel and her brother at five weeks because their momma rejected them,” Burks said. “They have given me so much joy and laughter, I think maybe they rescued me.”
Burks was very shocked by what she saw when she peered outside to check on Hazel. It was Hazel walking alongside a tiny little kitten.
Hazel was nudging the kitten along so she could bring her home.
Hazel didn’t want the sweet kitten to be stuck in the rain or be out there on her own. The kitten wasn’t sure which way they were going or where this dog was taking her so she kept stopping along the way.
Hazel, a yorkie/chihuahua/poodle mix, was very patient with the kitten.
She would stop along with the kitten to wait for her.
When the kitten would lag behind, she would stop and wait for the kitten to catch up.
When the cat would turn around, Hazel would step behind her and nudge her along to redirect the cat toward home.
She kept turning around the whole way to make sure the tiny calico kitten was still following along.
Hazel had to make several stops along the way until she and her new friend made it to the front door.
The kitten was able to make it up the first step but she needed help getting up that second step into the house.
So, Hazel just grabbed the kitty up in her mouth.
“Gentle, be gentle,” Burks can be heard telling Hazel while recording the incident.
Hazel carried the kitty inside and set her down where she was finally safe.
The tiny little cat was meowing the entire way.
“That’s love, pure love – I saw the motherly instinct come out in her,” Burks said.
A motherly instinct is exactly why Hazel and many dogs will help and adopt a kitten.
“Dogs have been known to adopt an abandoned or orphaned kitten. This is an instinct that female dogs have because of their maternal nature. They do this so the kitten will survive. The dam, or the dog mother, will welcome the kitten into her litter and feed it as her own. Sometimes non-lactating dogs will begin lactating if they find a kitten without a mother. The dog mother protects and cleans the kitten and treats it as her own until the kitten can survive independently,” the Wag! reports.
Burks named the kitten Sheba and found a forever home for her with her brother Michael.
