Dogs have a natural instinct to protect those they care about!
When you combine that natural protective instinct with the protective nature of a new mom, you get an animal who isn’t messing around when it comes to her pups!
As we’ve all seen dogs do, they sometimes protect things from threats that aren’t real.
If you’ve ever seen a dog lose its mind when someone walks by the front of the house, you know what I mean.
They will bark, sprint around, and howl until the “threat” has moved on past the yard (that they weren’t interested in anyway).
Sometimes, momma dogs can do something similar!
In one video, we see that protective display in action.
Dobermans are beautiful dogs that most of us have seen before! The AKC describes them as:
“Sleek and powerful, possessing both a magnificent physique and keen intelligence, the Doberman Pinscher is one of dogkind’s noblemen. This incomparably fearless and vigilant breed stands proudly among the world’s finest protection dogs.”
We have to agree with that description!
In this video, we see that vigilant protection on display.
Mom has recently given both to a healthy litter of pups!
They are tiny little things and are just reaching 4-weeks-old.
A four–week–old puppy spends most of his time sleeping and eating, but the rest of the time is spent exploring! He can stand up, walk around, wag his tail and test out little puppy barks. He interacts with his littermates and learns about his place in the world as a pup. – Puppy Spot
Since they are so little, however, mom is always watching!
We can see that dad comes over to say hello!
While it seems pretty innocuous, mom isn’t having any of it!
She starts to growl and let him know that “visiting hours are over” and she isn’t in the mood. Dad doesn’t seem to get the point and lets out a big yawn!
As the final straw, dad tries to lick one of the pups.
Mom is through! She snaps and chases him off (a sight we are all familiar with).
Once dad is gone, mom gathers all the pups again and tries to corral them back to where they need to be.
Dad decides that she needs some help… and is wrong!
We’ve all seen a father try and help a mom and just make things worse – that’s basically what’s happening here!
Mama is done with his antics and doesn’t let up with her little growls.
As the video ends, you can imagine that they are definitely going to be having a strongly-worded discussion when the kids go to bed later that night.
Doggy moms will sometimes keep dads away when the pups are young.
It makes sense! Dog Care details exactly why moms can be a little anxious with dads around:
Mother dogs sometimes find the males to be nuisances when they’re tending to their newborn babies. Mother dogs also might be wary that the males will be too rough with the delicate puppies. If you’re looking after a litter of pups, consider letting the father see them when they hit the 4-week mark.
We can’t blame her!
