Melissa Butt, from Southwest Florida, felt secure leaving her grandkids around her family’s dogs. Their protective nature reassured Melissa that they would protect her grandchildren’s’ lives no matter what. Yet, the unthinkable did happen and Melissa was amazed by her dogs’ reactions.
Melissa’s grandkids Zayden, a 4-years old, and his younger brother Mallory were playing outside when suddenly, the family dogs began barking.
Slayer, a pit bull who belongs to the Butt family, and other family dog Paco were enjoying their time outside when the two dogs noticed something moving rustling in the bushes. When the dogs went to investigate, they noticed that this mysterious animal was actually a venomous copperhead snake lurking around the house. Going into defensive mode, the two dogs began barking at the unwelcome intruder.
Nearby, the grandchildren of the Butt family were playing, ignorant to the danger threatening their lives only a few yards away. Their grandmother noticed the commotion and quickly brought the children inside to safety.
The two dogs stood watch, making sure to not let the snake out of their sight. While Melissa moved the kids to safety, the snake attacked Slayer and Paco. Both dogs were badly bitten in the struggle and would need to be treated right away for their wounds and the poison from the snake.
According to Melissa, Slayer then grabbed the snake in his mouth and crushed it, killing the snake immediately.
Fearing for her brace dogs’ safety, Melissa rushed the pair to the local vet only to be referred to an animal hospital in Brandon, Florida, a whole 40 minutes away. Slayer’s face had swelled up and his breathing became heavy as he fought to stay alive. Melissa rushed her dogs to the hospital as quickly as possible, hoping it wasn’t too late to save their lives.
Once at the hospital, both dogs were given life-saving medicine. Paco, who was bitten less, was cleared to go home after one day, while Slayer, who sustained most of the injuries, had to be given medication to take home. Thankfully, both dogs made a full recovery and will live to protect their family another day.
“There’s nothing I can say or do to show how grateful I am,” Melissa said about her amazing dogs. “How do you thank someone for saving your loved ones?”
Thank you to Melissa for sharing her amazing story about how heroic dogs can be, especially when it comes to the safety of their family!
