Dogs are incredibly intelligent animals. If you put enough time into it, you can teach a dog nearly anything— as this video will so clearly illustrate.
A few years ago, a rescue dog named Sadie stunned the world when she turned on owner’s organ on before playing a little tune.
In the video, you see the German shepherd/border collie cross from Edmonton, Canada, sitting tall at the organ bench, using her front paws to pound the keys. She listens intently to her owner’s instructions, showing ‘shame’ when she makes a mistake by covering her face with her furry paw.
Like any true performer, when Sadie’s finished, she turns and takes a bow.
According to Global News, Sadie was rescued by Casi Hofstede after being abandoned at seven months old. “We have a bond like no other. She’s almost like a child to me,” Hofstede explained.
But Hofstede is no regular pet owner. She’s also the owner of Anything’s Pawsible, a business offering a variety of pet services including behavioral consultations, grooming, training, and more.
Working alongside Sadie, Hofstede taught the dog each step of her organ routine. “What I did was chained a whole bunch of behaviors together,” she explained.
“First I taught her to jump up on the bench, then I taught her to turn the organ on with her teeth, then actually put her paws up on the organ and play it, and then to stand and take a bow at the end.”

Since being uploaded, Sadie’s adorable routine has been viewed more than a million times.
According to many websites, however, teaching your dog to play the piano is easier than you’d think. Wag! Dog Walking has an entire article dedicated to teaching your dog the adorable trick, but however, they warn: Just don’t expect too much in way of actual musical talent.”
Not every dog is a true virtuoso. In fact, Sadie may be a great performer, but she doesn’t seem to hold a match to these two golden retrievers. In this video you see them accompanying their owner as she plays “Waltz of the Fleas”:
But alas, this dazzling performance is also just a testament to the owner’s training skills. In fact, psychologist and zoologist Charles Snowden, from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, says the dogs are simply following cues.
“She’s playing notes and my guess is what they’ve done is learn the relationship between the notes she’s playing and where they are supposed to put their paws,” he told Live Science. Regardless of whether the dogs are piano prodigies, it’s still a pretty amazing trick.
As mentioned, since being uploaded, Sadie’s video has been viewed more than a million times. From beginning to end, she’s the perfect little performer— and her routine has stolen our hearts. A few comments on the video read:
“Sing us a song you’re the piano dog!”
“Cute video, gorgeous and smart dog!”
“Sadie plays the piano better than me. What a sweet doll she is. Simply adorable!”
