There’s no getting around it – babies are fascinating little creatures that seem to create an aura of gentleness around them.
It doesn’t matter if you are the burliest, leather and stud-clad, biker-gang-riding person in the world, you are going to coo and “awwww” as soon as you hold a fresh off-the-line wrinkly human in your hands.
Even animals understand the special environment that is created when a baby is in a room.
As humans, we all understand that if a baby is present, you are gentle, reserved, and quiet (as much as for the mom as for the newborn).
You walk gently, talk gently, and you might just be lucky enough to catch a cute yawn from the little one.
There is a lot of conflict about whether dogs understand what babies are, but most pet owners are firmly in one camp.
Bringing a baby home to see the family dog for the first time is a big deal.
You are nervous about the dog being protective over its attention, the potential that it gets too rough around the baby, etc.
While some of those concerns have legitimate merit, most of the time, the moment is as adorable as can be.
In a viral video, that first introduction was captured on camera, and the result is adorable.
In the video, we hear a man calling his dog and saying, “Come here! Look who it is!”
Soon, a big German Shepherd mix comes trotting into the room, happy to be getting some attention from its family.
Looking around, the dog doesn’t even know what’s going on at first!
The room was probably painstakingly prepared for the last few months to make sure the baby was happy and comfy.
Now, for the first time, the dog gets to come and see what all that hullabaloo was about!
When the dog finally realizes that Mom is holding a weird pink package, the introductions begin.
The baby is barely awake and is absolutely tiny!
When the dog walks over, it just wants to sniff this strange-smelling creature that Mom is holding.
With a wet nose, the dog sniffs the head and hands of the little baby while Mom keeps a watchful eye.
Curiosity abounds as the dog sniffs around gently.
You can almost see that the dog has caught on that this little wrinkly thing is quite important!
With a few licks to the feet and a wagging tail, the acquaintance is made.
The dog has officially added the baby to the inner circle and is ready to protect it at all costs.
While the science isn’t solid on why dogs treat differently, it’s pretty clear that they do.
Lots of dog owners would be able to relate to Wag Walking when they say:
“Pet owners have also said that their dogs tend to have more patience with babies and that dogs are usually gentler with babies than they are with adults. Some owners have even reported that their dog has become highly protective of their babies. You may even notice that some dogs tend to treat human babies like their own puppies.”
It’s possible that they DO just view babies as human puppies (which isn’t too inaccurate, actually).
If they view them as a puppy, they would surely treat them with the grace and gentleness that new puppies need.
