One woman has some serious explaining to do in Screven County, Georgia after she was caught on film callously mistreating a dog.
It happened in July of 2020 and the Sherriff’s office was so disturbed by the footage caught on a security camera that they posted it to Facebook to ensure the woman was identified and brought to justice.
In their post, they explained:
“On July 5th this poor dog was abandoned with a cage at one of the local trash collection sites. The dog has been picked up and is being taken care of. If anyone recognizes the vehicle or person in the video, please contact the Screven County Sheriff’s Office…”
Yep, you read that right – a woman put a puppy in a crate and just left it outside a dumpster.
She can be seen in the security footage dragging the crate with the puppy inside over to the trash to abandon it there.
We’re just grateful the pup was found in time.
Sadly, he did show signs of neglect and abuse.
There are few things that get people more riled up than seeing an animal mistreated. After all, there are SO many better options.
And it really says a lot about a person (and what else they might be capable of) when they’re so unnecessarily cruel to an animal.
Sheriff Mike Kile of the Screven County Sheriff’s Office delivered some good news in the same post.
“A review of the site’s video surveillance revealed footage that eventually led to the identification and arrest of the person responsible. Jacquelyn Symone Roberts, age 30, of Sylvania, GA, has been arrested and charged with Cruelty to Animals, as well as Abandoning a Domesticated Animal. She was released on bond pending further court proceedings.”
He then thanked the community for all of the efforts they put into helping to identify Roberts. She turned herself in at the jail after a felony warrant of animal abuse was issued when the police were able to track her down by her license plate.
“She had options available that she didn’t take any of them. They were there. She just wouldn’t take them. Why? Lord only knows. But there’s no sense in an animal suffering like that animal has suffered,” Sheriff Kile said.
Kile also told WTOC News that his office and a rescue group called Friends of Screven County Animals had already received hundreds of calls frrorm people asking to foster or adopt the pup.
“I think one came in from Australia, asking about the dog. Everybody wants to adopt it. Had a sheriff call from Indiana.”
He also reported that the rescue has given him the name “Chance” for the second chance he’s getting at life.
We certainly don’t know the circumstances behind the abandonment and some have suggested that Roberts might have done the more humane thing by making sure someone could find the dog rather than handing him over to animal control for euthanasia.
And while that may be the case, it rings a little hollow considering the dog had been mistreated prior to that.
It’s true that not every town has a no-kill shelter with room to take in new animals, but as long as a dog is in your care, it’s the least you can do to treat it with respect.
