The Hensons were enjoying themselves on their hard earned Las Vegas vacation. And being responsible dog owners, they left their dog, Dexter, at the doggy daycare.
So they really were not expecting to see anyone appear on the doorstep of their Kansas City home and ring the doorbell.
Yet that’s exactly what happened.
Dexter was supposed to be at the daycare on Feb. 16, but Jeremy and Sarah Henson’s home security app sent them a notification that someone rng the doorbell.
The doorbell’s camera showed their dog, Dexter, pawing at their front door, confused and wondering why he couldn’t get inside his house.
“It didn’t surprise me that he was on our front steps. I was just concerned that they didn’t know, so I called them. I was like, ‘My dog’s on your front porch, but I think he’s supposed to be there,'” Jeremy Henson told WDAF.
Apparently, Dexter escaped his pet hotel, actually walking the entire 90 minutes back to his house just to ring the doorbell.
5-year-old Dexter jumped a 6-foot fence to escape his pet hotel. Smart dog.
And from there, this dog took on the 2-mile, 90-minute journey to get home through Lenexa, Kan. Taking that trip by car is difficult so imagine a lonesome dog on his own.
Brave boy.
Dexter got home and rang the doorbell just to let his humans know that he wanted to sleep in his own bed. Dogs do have excellent navigational skills, able to remember locations based on smells and sounds.
Not to mention the Hensons do like to take Dexter on long walks, so this dog knows the area very well.
The doorbell’s camera feature did come in handy.
The camera has a two-way talk feature, so Jeremy was able to speak to his dog, keeping his brave bud calm until a friend of his arrived to collect the canine.
“We adopted Dexter to be a watchdog for my wife while I traveled, and he takes that job VERY seriously, so that’s probably why he was so determined to come home,” Jeremy said.
A blizzard was expected to hit the area so Jeremy knew he had to get Dexter indoors fast.
“Previously, it made me feel safe knowing that whenever anyone came to our doorstep, we would be notified of it. But now, I truly believe that the Ring Doorbell saved my dog’s life. Without it, he may have been stuck outside and wouldn’t have been able to find a warm spot to stay safe,” Jeremy added.
Dexter is intelligent as heck.
He’s also a very good boy.
And he did all that because he missed his humans and their home. There’s nothing a loving dog won’t do just to be with the people he loves. Dexter knew what he wanted.
Jeremy and Sarah did the right thing. They love Dexter and it must have been an emotional reunion when they returned.
