Dogs might be the most sacrificial creatures on the planet. There are just countless stories of dogs doing incredible things to look out for their owner, or even a stranger! Without a second thought, they will risk their own health and safety if they think it will benefit those they love.

This story shows that dogs are willing to sacrifice for more than just humans, too!

In Ontario, Canada, a stray dog was gound in the snow. Typically, temperatures can get cold enough to kill even the furriest dogs in Canada, and the situation seemed strange. Any street-smart dog would know that they needed to get somewhere warmer if they wanted to sleep.

When it was revealed what was actually happening, the world was amazed.

It was literally freezing outside, and a driver on the road spotted the dog sleeping in the snow. Concerned by the sight, they decided to stop and check on the dog to make sure it was ok, especially with the weather like it was.

Getting close to the dog, they saw that it wasn’t alone.

The lone dog that the driver originally thought they saw turned out to be a much different situation. The dog was curled tightly around a small litter of kittens. Incredibly, the dog wasn’t sleeping; it was protecting!

Insulation is key when it comes to staying alive in the cold.

Bigger animals find it easier to maintain body heat, and since kittens are so small, they are vulnerable to weather changes. The dog, treating the litter like her own puppies, had used her body as a wind and show shield against the elements.

Just that small bit of insulation surely saved the kittens.

“It’s truly heartwarming! It had been a very cold night so these kittens would have had a very hard time surviving.” – The Dodo

While we don’t know how long the kittens had been outside for, it’s almost certain that they wouldn’t have made it if it wasn’t for “mama dog” coming to the rescue. Instead of going and finding herself a warmer, dryer place, she put her own life at risk for the little furballs!

The driver picked up the shivering animals and took them to Pet and Wildlife Rescue for help.

When they got to the shelter, the cold was only a temporary problem. After they had all been warmed up, the vet noticed that the kittens were covered in fleas and worms but were otherwise safe. The only thing left was to find out what to do with the motley crew.

They were held for three days to see if anyone was looking for them.

At the end of the “hold period,” they were available for adoption. Currently, there isn’t anyone coming forward and looking for four cats and a dog – the rescuers don’t even know if the dog found the kittens after or was stranded with them. What we DO know is that people’s hearts all across the internet would be broken if the six of these furry friends were separated! The “mama dog” still visits her adopted kittens every day.
