Dogs can be anyone’s best friends really. One of the species that get along very well with them is horses. Both dogs and horses are extremely smart, and they both can be great companions, so why not be companions of each other?
One example of canine-equine friendship is that of Orion and Destiny.
The two animals live in Harryda, Sweden, and they first met when Orion, an Australian shepherd, was still a puppy.
In 2017, the two-month-old puppy met Destiny, the beautiful mustang, for the first time. They instantly liked each other, and it was obvious that they would develop a strong bond very soon.
“I wanted [Orion] to be comfortable around horses early on, so that he could come to work with me,” says Orion’s owner, Rebecca, who works with horses.
In November 2017, the woman took the puppy with her to the stables and let him explore the surroundings. At some point, she stopped hearing noises, so she got a little anxious and started looking for him.
When she found him, she couldn’t believe her eyes.
Orion had spotted Destiny, and he had approached her trying to hug and lick her face. Rebecca felt such warmth in her heart as she hadn’t felt before.
Since then, Orion and Destiny have been best friends, and they do lots of fun stuff together.
The most interesting part is that Orion just won’t start his day if his horse friend is not with him. He waits for her to appear every morning, and when he sees her, he runs towards her, ready to hug and kiss her.
Of course, Destiny enjoys this relationship, too.
“Every single morning, no matter how far away in the pasture she is,” Rebecca explains, “she somehow knows he is here, and runs up to greet him.”
The two spend long hours hugging and kissing each other. Orion enjoys licking Destiny’s face, while the horse spends time licking her furry friend’s back.
Then, they love chasing each other and eating some grass together. And, although Rebecca is busy taking care of the horses at the stables, the two best friends just won’t stop playing outside.
As for their absolute favorite thing to do together? That’s hugging.
Indeed, actual hugging. Although Orion is not as tall as Destiny, he has learned to stand on his hind feet in order to get taller and have the chance to hug his best friend’s face.
“Orion will get up on his back legs and just throw his paws around Destiny and give her plenty of kisses.”
Rebecca, Orion, and Destiny also love to go hiking together. And while it is Orion who usually leads the way, he always keeps an eye on his best friend, making sure that she’s following him.
Similarly, when Rebecca shoes Destiny, Orion is always present, carefully watching the whole process and supporting his friend.
What a lovely friendship between two amazing creatures!
