Dogs are smart animals with good instincts and incredible noses.
These traits have led to some incredible stories of dogs finding both people and other animals who need help. And one great example of this happened one cold winter’s day in Michigan.
A seemingly regular walk that a volunteer was taking with a dog at the Michigan Animal Rescue League turned into something special when that dog tugged the volunteer towards an emaciated dog that they had never seen before.
The dog was hiding behind a bush with a rope tied around his neck. He clearly needed help and was taken immediately inside.
The dog was starved, with ribs poking out, and he was suffering from frostbite from the freezing air.
He could barely stand on his legs from the cold and hunger.
No one knows how the pit bull mix got there, and the security footage didn’t reveal anyone tying him to the bush he was hiding behind.
The volunteers at the shelter think he may have instinctively understood that the shelter was a safe place for him.
The dog was renamed Winston, and he began his recovery at the shelter.
“Winston appears to be enjoying the comforts of MARL and is recovering well,” the shelter wrote on Facebook along with a few photos of Winston.
Once he was well enough, shelter volunteers began taking him on outings to help him regain his confidence.
“Two of our dedicated volunteers took Winston on an outing over the weekend! They report that Winston is great in the car, loves to explore and extremely easy going. What’s not to love?” the shelter wrote on Facebook.
Luckily, it didn’t take long for the perfect family to come along.
About a month after Winston arrived at the shelter, he was adopted! He immediately fell in love with his new parents and sister.
Winston is sure to have an exciting life ahead with a loving family that can properly take care of the young dog for many years ahead.
We’re so glad that Winston was found and now has a wonderful forever home. What a good ending to the story.
